However, the life of an Aerolithican Skyknight is one frought with peril, and never in the order's history have both a dragon and rider reached an age where they have been able to lay down their arms, their work fulfilled. The story of a Skyknight always ends with one or the other perishing in the line of duty. Should the rider fall, their dragons have been known to linger in the vicinity of The Dragon's Maw for up to several weeks before departing, never to be seen again. Should the dragon fall, the rider suffers immense psychic backlash - the pain of quite literally losing half of one's self. After a period of rehabilitation, they take on the mantle of the most respected individuals within the Aerolithican military: the Sky Marshals.
A veteran Skyknight's experience is a precious resource, and one the realm cannot see squandered. The Sky Marshals are appointed not just to train current and prospective Skyknights, but also to offer counsel and guidance, understanding these individuals and their unique mindset in a way few other people across Iridica can. They help with the transitional period following a new rider's bonding; a time where one's sense of identity is in upheaval, and relationships with past friends and family will be changed forever.
