Sulfur Pits

Located near a collection of muds pits, paint pots and hot springs the settlement of Sulfur Pits went largely unnoticed. A collection of mud mounds belied the large structures beneath in which people had built an interconnected collection of stone and clay walled rooms and buildings. With only a meter or less of each building visible above ground the people who resided at the Sulfur Pits were able to avoid scrutiny for several generation.
Visitors were largely ignored in hopes of remaining undetected though the residence did establish a relationship with at least two mages who appear to have bartered for some years with the settlement.
The people of the Sulfur Pits subsisted on a combination of barrel raised fish, tubers, a few shade resilient plant species as well as an assortment of farmed insect and fungal species.
In addition to the underground spaces the settlement boasted a walled and often covered garden where hot peppers were grown with the aid of the nearby sulfur rich mud pits to create a crop with an impressive Scoville rating.
The singular hot spring that boasted a non-corrosive PH was housed in the largest above ground structure, the walls carefully crafted to appear similar to the surrounding landscape. The hot spring both served as a heat source for the underground dwellings and a place of communal relaxation.
With little access to workable metals and no mages residing at the settlement most objects were hand crafted, often of clay or stone. The people who made the Sulfur Pits their home eschewed the common culture and religion, opting for a complex set of familial traditions and practices that have become lost to time.
Anthropological evidence has indicated that the residence were careful in their reproductive activities with very little evidence of interbreeding in the recovered genetics materials from the remains at the site.
