Pan - The Rustic Lord

Pan, the Rustic Lord, was one of the Archfae of Faerie and an unaligned Wildfae.

Pan was said to be a figure of merry song and dance, responsible for throwing grand and boisterous parties across Faerie. Pan was also known to be a debauched individual, a great enjoyer of food, wine and sex. Many stories about Pan involve him attempting and failing to court numerous Nymphs across the Planes.

Because of his love of parties, Pan was often associated with the Baccheia, as well as the God Dionysus, who were both in the business of throwing grand celebrations, with conflicting stories claiming that they were either close friends, or bitter rivals.

Pan is said to have been the first Satyr, and continues to be a legendary figure among Satyr, honoured alongside Dionysus. He was said to be often surrounded and attended to by an entourage of Satyr, who honoured him as a God-like figure.

Pan was also the patron of shepherds and the lord of the mountain wilds of Faerie. Old stories claim that Pan wandered the rural countryside of Exorsia, protecting flocks and blessing shepherds who honoured him. His unseen presence said to arouse panic in predators and trespassers who encroached on the lands under his protection.

Disappearance

Pan has not been seen or heard from in centuries, having vanished around the dawn of the Age of Arcanum, with it widely believed that Pan died.

Scholars speculate that the environmental problems present during the Age of Arcanum may have caused Pan to fade or die, or their source of nature may have been irreparably damaged, causing them to wither and pass.

Many Satyr still cling onto hope that their Lord would return, holding grand celebrations in an attempt to entice him back to them.

Myth of the Panpipes

Pan is credited with the creation of the Panpipes, which bear his name. Their creation story is a common tale told by Satyr.

As the story goes, one day Pan came across a sorry gathering of Satyr while travelling the wilds of Faerie, who had no music to entertain themselves. Saddened by the sombre mood, Pan wanted to bring joy and liven the gathering, but there were no instruments around. So Pan is said to have gone to a nearby river and asked for a clump of reeds from the river Naiad that resided there. From these Pan created the Panpipes and brough song and dance to the gathering.

To this day many Satyr carry a pair of Panpipes so they would not be without song and dance when the event called for it.

Appearance

Pan is usually depicted as a masculine Satyr, with tan skin, a head of curly, brown hair, and a pair of curled horns that extend from his forehead. He is commonly portly in build, with thick, curly body hair, hooved legs covered in thick fur, and a curly beard. He is almost always depicted nude, save for a pair of Panpipes that hang around his neck.

Personality

Pan was said to be a rambunctious and exuberant individual, a lover of extravagance and excess. He was a jovial and friendly figure, the life of the party and a friend to all, never found without friends by his side.

Pan was also said to be a debauched figure and a constant flirt, with a particular interest in courting Nymphs. Despite his popularity, Pan is was rarely successful in his pursuits, rumoured to come on too strong, but it is said that his failure never dampened his spirits.
