Fathomless

The Fathomless are a rare, almost mythological, species of semi-aquatic humanoids, neither alive not dead, cursed to live an unnatural existence. Fathomless are said not to be born, but magically created, a mutation of another species. 

Sailors tell tales of the Fathomless, mariners who drowned at sea, sinking to the dark depths below, only to be given a deal, another chance at life. Those that accept, hoping to cheat death, are transformed into the Fathomless, cursed beings augmented with aquatic traits, body parts replaced by tentacles and crab claws, barnacle covered bodies, and the ability to both breathe both on land and underwater. Trapped at the verge of death, not alive, but not dead either.

The Fathomless are said to be bound in service to being that lurks within the dark depths of the ocean, where no man nor Merfolk can go. An unknowable creature of the depths that lingers between the Elemental Plane of Water and our own, trapped, and desiring nothing but their freedom. It is said that while the Fathomless are capable of walking on land, they are always drawn back to the sea, called to serve their unholy master.

Despite much myth and superstition around their existence, evidence and old records suggests that the Fathomless, or being like them, do exist. Mortals saved from the brink of drowning, only to find themselves irreversibly altered and in the service of an otherworldly being. Many tales of ghost ships are linked to the existence of the Fathomless.

It is unknown whom these Fathomless are raised by, many speculate that it may be the Titan of Sea Monsters Ceto, an elder Kraken, an unnamed Abyssal Lord, or even one of the Elder Evils.

The Fathomless are believed to be found at the dark depths of the ocean, only travelling to the surface do do the bidding of their dark master. Sighting of Fathomless are rare, and many are probably false, but they are often met with fear and hostility due to their evil nature and horrifying appearance.

Appearance

Fathomless are said to resemble their origin species but with added aquatic qualities, such as scaly or blubbery skin, tentacles, crab claws for hands, or barnacle encrusted bodies.

Maturity

It is believed that the Fathomless do not age, and are permanently trapped in a state of undeath.

Reproduction

Due to their Undead nature it is believed that Fathomless are infertile and can not reproduce.
