Dreadpenny Fleet
The Dreadpenny Fleet is a collective of pirates that operate under one banner. They primarily operate in the Red Current, between Osirin and Hepsut, and are known to raid trade-ships, hold captives at ransom, and they formerly traded in slaves.
The Fleet was formed in the late 1900’s, after conflict between rival pirates ships across the Red Current became more common than conflict with any other ships, with a majority of the cargo falling to the depths of the sea. In response to this, Captains from across Kuai Archipelago came together to form a makeshift council, where they agreed to outlaw conflict with other members of the council, as well as opening up the opportunity to ally together in order to take on bigger and more well defended targets, sharing in the spoils. The pirate council also established the portside town of Cutthroat Bay, designating it as a safe-haven for pirates to trade and rest.
The pirate council grew in popularity and size over the following years, eventually gaining the name the Dreadpenny Fleet. The origin of the name is unknown, but the most popular rumour is that the name is in reference to the founding pirate captains, who supposably each paid a copper penny to each other as a show of unity. Over the years the Dreadpenny Fleet fluctuated in it's success, in some years they were a major threat to world trade, and in other years the pirates were embroiled in civil wars and random conflicts.
This all came to a head in 2073, when the pirate council was usurped by a young Captain Nakida, who lead a violent coup against the council, slaying all the old captains and installing those loyal to her as head of the fleet. Nakida took complete control over the Dreadpenny Fleet, crowning herself the "Dreadpenny Queen". The Queen now controls the Fleet with an iron fist, ruing the seas from her throne at Cutthroat Bay. It is rumoured that the Dreadpenny Queen outlawed slavery within the Fleet because she was once a slave herself, it is also rumoured that she is part Kraken.
Under the rule of the Dreadpenny Queen, the Dreadpenny Fleet has grown to be a significant threat to the sea trade of the Kuai Archipelago, with many vessels forced to pay a ransom to sail the Red Current. Both the Coven of Maran and the Varin Empire have made attempts to combat the Fleet's operations in the years following the Queens ascension to power, but to no avail. The pirates coordination and superior understanding of the complex network of islands across the Kuai Archipelago, allowing them to stay ahead of the competition.
