Ebrus

The cold and unforgiving northwest region of Droukar, Ebrus is home to three major houses after the signing of the Great Treaty that founded the current kingdom. Geography Ebrus is fairly mountainous on its northern to eastern borders, with the west leaving more space and soil available for agriculture and the dense, dark forests that the area is known for. The mountainous borders are guarded by the Jotensbane Family; with the plains and forests wardened by the Barracks and Torvold families, respectively.

Agriculture and Economy

Grains and root vegetables are the primary consumption crops grown in the Ebrus region, and this has been the case for well over 2000 years. Barley, lentil, and other oats make up a large portion of meals in the region as well as frequent use of potatoes and carrots.   Within the region, the primary trade is food. Small amounts of stone and metals are mined in the north (usually enough to make tools or nails) which is then traded by people of the north for meats (fresh and salted) from the wooded eastern area, as well as grain and alcohol from the west. This balance was first set forth by the founder of Clan Barracks almost 1500 years ago when the clans were settling into what would become the 3 Great Houses of the North and had been the cornerstone of peace among the hot-blooded families for generations.   When trading with the other countries of Droukar, the two main exports of Ebrus are Alcohol and (oddly enough) sugar. Recent cultivation has shown that the area can reliably output large quantities of sugar beets, which are then refined into a slightly pink sugar that is somewhat sought after by chefs, including that of the Battle Chef Brigade. Needless to say, there is only so much income to be gained from ales, beers, and sugar. Most of the money earned by Ebrus is funneled into Moglea to the south for various breads and vegetables.

Structure

Lord Regent

This title is given to the man or woman that runs the region as dictated by King or Queen Redfirth. As long as Ebrus has been a country the ruling family has been the Jotensbane's. They are given complete control of the region and all other lords of the land must answer to the Lord Regent. The only authority that the Lord Regent of Ebrus must answer to is the King or Queen of Droukar themselves.

Scion

The next in line to become Lord Regent. This has always been the eldest male of the Jotensbane clan.

Duke/Duchess

A duke or duchess holds a high rank below the monarch and can rule over another lower member of the nobility. They were essentially the rulers of the provinces.

Marquess/Marchioness

The Marquess/ Marchioness ranks higher than a count. The title is ranked below Duke.

Earl/Countess

Earl is also a member of the nobility. Countless is used as the feminine form of the title.

Viscount/Viscountess

A viscount is said to hold a viscounty or an area of jurisdiction. Viscountess is the female version of the title.

Baron/ Baroness

Baron was originally used to denote a chief of the King. The female version of Baron is called as Baroness.

Knights

More of an honorary title than anything else. Knights are treated as great warriors who stand for everything that represents Ebrus as a country. Many keep the peace within the region's borders and are expected to take charge in times of crisis when no proper authority figure is present.

Public Agenda

Ebrus mainly acts as the northern border of the Badlands. Their primary job as a country is to keep the Badlands out of Droukar and to protect the breadbasket of Droukar, Moglea.

Assets

Ebrus, being primarily built into the Goldencrest Mountains, has a vast amount of metals such as Silver, Gold, and Iron. This allows them to have very strong armor and weapons. They also possess one of the largest sugar deposits in Droukar, thus giving them the nickname the sweet north. A variety of military outposts are scattered across Ebrus making it one of the more defensible regions. The Yarin Outpost, Aluzar Keep, Castle Whitegate, Crullfeld Outpost and Vingulf are some of the more prominent keeps of Ebrus.

History

To the north of the Mountains are vast reaches of wildlands where might makes right and family lines mean nothing. These barbarians, which were comprised of over 100 warring tribes, were in a constant state of turmoil and wandering. Their reach even once extended to the waters to the south, according to local legend. Though given the source it is unclear whether that was the nearby river (which is more likely) or the great sea to the south (which is unlikely because the sources do not mention a desert.) At an unknown time, though definitely before the signing of the great treaty, the Rock Giants beneath the mountain range began attacking any who would use the narrow mountain passes, which kept further wanderers from entering the area, and trapped several thousand within the steep mountain passes. Try as they might, the separated, disjointed clans found themselves to be completely unable to dislodge the Rock Giants from their stony mountain keeps. This event is called “The Loss of Home” in local history.   After The Loss of Home skirmishes within the mountain ranges lessened over time. without huge swaths of land to take replacement soldiers from, the war was no longer a profitable way of life for the people, which became abundantly clear as their numbers dwindled. A select few of the clan that would eventually become clan Barrecks ventured far enough south and took slaves of the people they found. These half-men were small and weak. Not suited for war. But what they lacked in strength, they made up for in their knowledge of Agriculture. Barrecks soon became a powerhouse as his men were well fed in the harsh winters while the other clan’s people starved and dwindled.   Not wanting to be wiped out, Clan Torvold captured and bred the animals found within the forests. His forts were built of wood and reinforced with hide, his men wore warm clothes made of wool and leather, and they feasted upon the meat of the animals when they bore no more milk or wool.   The last of the Great houses to be formed was that of Clan Malikorme. Their opponents were many, well-fed, and unassailable. Their numbers dwindle to only a few hundred as starvation and exposure took more of them as the years went by. In a last act of desperation, they took to the tunnels in the Rock-Giant infested mountains. Though the Giants were stronger, they were fewer in number and wore no armor. The desperate men stormed the Rock Giant keep as one of the scavenging parties returned, hacking away at the doors and taking the keep. It was said that when the battle was over there were only 14 members of the Clan left.   News spread of this feat, not just to clans Torvold and Barrecks, but to the wildmen north of the mountains. These wild men had heard how these ‘south-men’ had low numbers, how many of their slaves were weak and could not fight, how they had dropped blades and dug into the ground for survival. They pegged these south-men for easy targets.   When the first war parties began marching through the mountains, the Malikorme sealed the passes as the Giants had done to them long ago, and sent word to the other clans. If the walls fell, their lives would be at the mercy of thousands of their estranged clansmen, and all of their hardship would be for nothing. The Malikorme called for every able-bodied man to join in a fight of desperate survival. Clan Barrecks had another plan.   A treaty was signed in the blood of the heads of the 3 Great Houses, binding them under oath or forfeit their chances at the afterlife. The three would unite to defend the land that they had made a home, supporting each other with everything they had to form the strongest clan. They called it Clan Ebrus, which means “Timeless” or “Without End” in their tongue, and all members of each clan were present on the day of the signing of the treaty. Not a soul spoke out against it, and it was said to be the first (and only) time the Ebrus Clan ever agreed on something.   The Resulting fortifications and support allowed Clan Ebrus to force their estranged clansmen off with ease, and it has been this way ever since; though, after the Great Treaty house, Malikorme translated their name as a show of solidarity to Jotensbane (Slayer of Giants) keeping with their clan’s original name.
