Dullahan

Most people agree that the Dullahan is the best and most terrifying of all the Riders that the Graveforge Horse created. These superhuman entities reside in a state halfway between life, undeath, and spirit, having been born from death and kept alive by dark magic. A Dullahan, in contrast to lesser Riders, progressively gains an autonomous identity and will, evolving into something far more than a servant. They eventually transform into enigmatic beings whose goals and thinking are frequently hard for regular people to comprehend.   They are easily recognized by their appearance. A Dullahan bears its own severed head while a vibrant, flame-like aura emanates from its neck and head, creating a ghostly bridge between them. For those who are unlucky enough to come across one, they are easily recognizable due to their odd presence, dark ceremonial clothing, and pale flesh. While some cultures see them as guardians of the line separating the living world from the afterlife, others see them as signs of death.   Dullahans are not heartless murderers, despite their horrific reputation. They have the intelligence to think, plan, and communicate, and they can still recall their past lives. However, a large portion of their emotional connection to the world is lost throughout the metamorphosis. They frequently speak of even the most horrific occurrences as mere facts and have an uncomfortable detachment from life, death, and suffering. A Dullahan views death as an unavoidable aspect of life rather than something to be feared or rejoiced.   Their connection to death grants them powers rarely understood by mortal scholars. Through Soul Sight and Veilwalker Vision, they can perceive souls, spiritual corruption, wandering spirits, and even glimpses of realms hidden beyond the Material World. This unique perspective often draws them toward places where death is common, where souls linger, or where the natural cycle of life and death has been disturbed.   Stories about Dullahans can be found in almost any culture affected by dark magic because of these characteristics. They are portrayed in some legends as ruthless executioners, in others as silent guardians for lost souls, and in yet others as hunters who chase down individuals who have been marked by fate. Regardless of the veracity of the story, one thing is always true: once a Dullahan focuses on a human, few people ever forget the experience, and many do not make it out alive.

Basic Information

Anatomy

A Dullahan must originate from a bipedal sentient creature.   Their bodies become unnaturally pale, as though every drop of blood has been drained from their flesh. Their most defining feature is their severed head, which remains separate from the body.   From both the neck stump and the severed head flows a colorful mist-like flame that matches the Dullahan's aura. This supernatural energy constantly attempts to connect the head and body, creating a spectral bridge between them.   Their clothing is no longer ordinary fabric. Instead, it is formed from dark energy and shaped by the Dullahan's self-image. Most appear in the attire of a noble rider, dark knight, or aristocrat, giving them an imposing and eerie presence.

Origin

A Dullahan is created when a Graveforge Horse beheads a compatible victim and chooses to raise them as one of its greatest Riders.   The resurrection ritual is brutal. The Graveforge Horse impales the corpse through the:
  • Head
  • Heart
  • Both hands
  • Both feet
It then transfers half of its own power into the body.   As the transformation begins, the victim's skin turns pale and their aura erupts from the severed neck as a brilliant flame. The energy attempts to reconnect the head and body before stabilizing into the permanent mist-like bridge seen in all Dullahans.   The victim's clothing is consumed and reformed into dark ceremonial attire, and the newly created Dullahan rises from death to pick up its own severed head.

Biological Traits

Resistances & Weaknesses
  • Immune to Dark Magic
  • Resistant to death effects and fear
  • Weak to Light Magic
  • Weak to Divine Magic that are healing effects specifically designed to harm undead
  • Shadow Cloak
Dullahans can wrap themselves in dark energy, concealing their presence from sight and dulling the awareness of nearby creatures.   In darkness, this ability can make them nearly impossible to detect until they choose to reveal themselves.
Conjured Armaments
A Dullahan can summon weapons formed from dark energy.   These weapons can be infused with debilitating effects such as:
  • Blindness
  • Deafness
  • Fear
  • Poison
  • Physical weakness
  • Reduced speed
  • Mental impairment
Each Dullahan develops preferences for certain weapons, though they are capable of creating many different forms.
Touch of Death
One of the most feared abilities possessed by a Dullahan.   By making physical contact with a target, the Dullahan can inject a massive amount of dark energy directly into the victim's body.   This corruption spreads through the target, causing:
  • Pain
  • Weakness
  • Organ failure
  • Physical deterioration
Left untreated, the corruption can eventually shut down the body's natural functions and result in death.   For this reason, experienced adventurers consider allowing a Dullahan to grab hold of them a potentially fatal mistake.
Regeneration
Dullahans possess remarkable regenerative abilities.   Their bodies can repair:
  • Cuts
  • Broken bones
  • Missing flesh
  • Internal injuries
Given enough energy, they can recover from wounds that would kill most creatures.   Interestingly, their clothing regenerates alongside them because it is composed entirely of their own dark energy.   Many hunters use this fact as a way to judge a Dullahan's condition. If their clothing begins showing tears, fading, or damage that remains unrepaired, it is often a sign that the Dullahan is running low on mana and energy reserves.
Shadow Step
The Dullahans gain the ability to teleport through darkness.   By stepping into one shadow and emerging from another nearby, they can move instantly across short distances.   This ability often makes it appear as though the Dullahan has materialized from nowhere, reinforcing the legends that they can appear wherever death awaits.

Behaviour

The transformation into a Dullahan strips away much of a person's emotional expression.   They become:
  • Detached
  • Direct
  • Cold
  • Focused
A Dullahan can still speak, think, and remember much of its former life, but emotions become distant and muted.   When they speak, everything is presented as a simple fact rather than an opinion.   If a Dullahan says:   "You are going to die."   It is not a threat.   It is a statement.   Even in battle, they display little anger or hatred. Their actions are carried out with the certainty of inevitability rather than emotion.   This makes them particularly terrifying opponents. They cannot be intimidated, bargained with easily, or convinced through emotional appeals. Once they have decided on a course of action, they pursue it relentlessly.   Those marked by a Dullahan often describe the experience as being hunted by an unstoppable force rather than a person.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Dullahans retain the natural senses of their original species, including sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch.   However, they gain several supernatural senses as well.   Soul Sight   Dullahans can perceive souls directly.   This allows them to:
  • See the souls of living creatures
  • Identify those nearing death
  • Detect spiritual corruption
  • Distinguish life from undeath
Unlike many spirit-sensing abilities, Soul Sight does not primarily detect ghosts or spirits. Instead, it reveals the actual souls that dwell within living beings.   Veilwalker Vision   Dullahans can partially perceive beyond the Material Realm.   Through this ability they can:
  • See portals opening to the afterlife
  • Observe wandering souls
  • Notice Grim Reapers and similar entities
  • Glimpse portions of the Astral Realm
Because of this, Dullahans possess a unique perspective on the cycle of life and death.
