Bugbear

Bugbears are a massive humanoid race distantly related to, but larger and stronger than, goblins and hobgoblins.   Bugbears resemble hair, feral goblins standing 7 feet tall. They take their name from their noses and claws, which are similar to those of bears. THeir claws are not long and sharp enough to be used as weapons, so bugbears often armor and arm themselves in a variety of purloined gear, which is normally second-rate and in poor repair.   Bugbears, like other goblinoids, have a reputation for being dim-witted and brutish. This claim is not unfounded, and like their kin, bugbears have easily provoked tempers and are prone to rages. Few bugbears overcome this flaw and their culture's brutal nature. Many bugbears are chaotic evil in alignment, favoring stealth and surprising opponents.   Bugbear heroes, though rare, are heard of and can acquire significant renown if successful. Often the motivation for this change of heart comes from the rewards earned from virtue, which in the long term are more pleasing than the short-term pleasures of evil behavior.

Religion

Bugbears have their own pantheon, led by DEITY. THey often decapitate their enemies as a way to honor DEITY, who is said to do the same. Other deities in the bugbear pantheon are shared by numerous other goblinoid deities, and other races often see these pantheons as only a single large pantheon.   Other bugbear deities include DEITY2, the bugbear deity of hunting, senses, stealth and surprise; and DEITY3.

Civilization and Culture

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Like many goblinoids, bugbears speak the goblin language, and they often have their own language which is little more than a harsher and more grating dialect of the common tongue of goblinoids.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Bugbears are often found in the company of other goblinoids, particularly goblins, since tribes made up mostly of hobgoblins and bugbears tend to be wiped out quickly by other races as a precaution. Some bugbears also operate independently, though tribes ruled by hobgoblins are better organized and less savage. This is in part because bugbears have little patience for diplomacy or negotiation, preferring violent solutions to conflicts unless obviously overpowered.

Special Advantages. Player character bugbears receive 3 bonus hit points at 1st level.   Bugbears have infravision to 60 feet.   Bugbears are exceptionally stealthy, giving opponents a -3 penalty to their surprise rolls unless they are within 90 feet of a party member that is not an elf or halfling that is not wearing metal armor.   Special Disadvantages. Bugbears take damage as large creatures.   Role-Playing Suggestions. Bugbears speak a foul sounding language punctuated by gestures, grunts, and snarls. They even use these bestial habits when talking in common, making other races doubt their intelligence.   Even the bravest bugbear PC has trouble breaking away from its tribe. They prefer to ambush their foes rather than attack head on. If outnumbered or overmatched, most will retreat to fight another day.   Adventuring bugbears remain territorial even after they leave their lairs. They mentally mark out territory wherever they go, even when traveling. Anything which comes into this space becomes their property (at least in their own minds), or the property of their new tribe (their PC companions). They are natural bullies, forcing their wills on weaker companions. They are an opportunistic race, prone to temper tantrums and violent outbursts.   Bugbears enjoy wine and strong ale—often to excess. They are stubborn by nature, finding it difficult to negotiate or compromise. Greed courses through their bodies like blood, and even the most noble bugbear covets glittery, shiny objects and weapons.   Languages. Bugbear, goblin, hobgoblin, common.   Monstrous Traits. Monstrous appearance, snarling language, long sharp claws.   Superstitions. Always watchful for omens from the gods; afraid of lightning and violent weather changes; seek to keep on the good side of DEITY3, the bugbear god of fear.   Weapon Proficiencies.
