Whitest Witch

The Whitest Witch is the title given to the head of the White Mages, a conservative human-supremacist coven based in Watersmeet. Like all of the White Mages she governs, the Witch is charged with “purifying” the “putrid soul” of Wonderland, but as their leader she is further charged with the “collection” of “lost” children with whom the Mages might swell their ranks.

Qualifications

The candidate must:

    • be female
    • be aged 25, but not more than 60
    • have dedicated at least 10 years of their life to the organization

These qualifications are not particularly hard to achieve, given that the almost all Mages are female, all but a fraction have been raised in the faith since they were children, and most die before age 50 in one conflict or another. But when an out-of-touch crone campaigned for the post in 187, the rest of the coven decided there needed to be at least some standards going forward.

Appointment

The Whitest Witch is appointed for life. As such, a new Witch is only selected upon the occasion of the previous Witch’s demise. This demise, typically untimely, results in an immediate cessation of all coven business and the convening of a conclave.

The conclave meets at the Mages’ manor in Watersmeet and is comprised of the high priest or priestess of each local coven from across the land. Once per day until they have reached an accord, the members of the conclave vote my secret ballot on which of the women in their midst shall be named the Whitest Witch. The election is a process which has taken as little as one day and as long as two months. It is concluded only once a candidate has received two-thirds or more of the votes cast, after which they are announced to the Mages gathered on the first floor of the manor.

Duties

The Whitest Witch oversees the coven of Watersmeet and the high priests and priestesses of all other covens in Eden. Beyond that, her primary duty is to bring the next generation of Mages into the fold—by whatever means necessary. This involves everything from the fostering of orphans to the adoption of children from “broken” homes to the outright kidnapping of kids from “irresponsible” parents in the “lawless” Free Cities of Nunya.

Occasionally, the Witch will recruit 18-year-olds she sees approaching the nearby Lasso Lounge in hopes of employment there, but the proprietors of that establishment do their best to keep her away. They claim the Witch and her cronies have used magic to coerce young women in the past, and that they are not above doing the same now or in the future.
