Between Coma and Karma

Elemental pilgrimage without spiritual confusion

Have you attained spiritual enlightenment and now wish to undertake the pilgrimage of your lifetime to the Aqi Talúsix?

Congratulations! With our guidebook, you will discover valuable tips — that even Eqilateus, would have loved to know beforehand — to help you find sacred dreams and steer clear of unholy potholes.   This humorous companion for journeys to the World Tree offers a lovingly tongue-in-cheek take on the historic pilgrimage undertaken by the great faerie-elf Eqilateus of Vinduria in 8,641 BFE. We reveal where to find the finest pilgrim ale, which mud bath will revitalize your weary limbs, how to use lava to cook up a hearty meal, and which campsite yields the most wondrous dreams.

In addition, you will receive:
  • an energetic danger-dream scale for every sacred site,
  • a personal pilgrim's diary,
  • a World Tree etiquette guide,
  • the sacred pilgrim map,
  • and much more.

Your spiritual guide is quite robust and knows how to withstand all the elements. You will notice how it becomes a little lighter with every passing day of your journey, and you need not fear losing it — it will find you again and is guaranteed to warn you of the next danger.
May your karma survive the coma, and may your blister plaster always hold!

Physical Appearance

The burgundy, shimmering golden cover of the guidebook is made of soft, warm leather bark interwoven with sea silk. Emanating from an illustration of the World Tree centered on the front cover, delicate roots wind around the book's corners, shielding them like metal fittings. The book is secured by a living vine — one the pilgrim should treat with reverence if they wish it to reveal the contents within. On the back cover lies a circular scale spanning 120 days, which tracks the pilgrim's journey-karma through a series of small, daily points of light until the circle closes upon completion. Outside this circle, situated in the corners, are four recessed seals marking the elemental stages of the pilgrimage as they are completed. Upon the journey's end, the pilgrim's diploma also manifests in this space.   When Eqilateus of Vinduria undertook his pilgrimage to the World Tree in the 7th millennium prior to the founding of the Council—thereby attaining profound insights into the genesis of the World — his own journey began upon the Continent of Air. Yet, it was deemed unreasonable to expect every pilgrim to first undertake the arduous trek to Téshàn; furthermore, since the "Pilgrim-Father" himself had been guided to four distinct energy centers before finally reaching the World Tree, this companion guide was ingeniously designed in a practical four-ring binder format — complete with a color-coded system and a user-friendly rotational mechanism tailored to each specific element. The rings themselves are fashioned from hair-thin, yet extraordinarily resilient shoots of the World Tree — smooth to the touch, like polished horn —ensuring that once the journey's starting point is aligned, the pilgrim may follow in Eqilateus's footsteps, regardless of which continent serves as the gateway for their elemental "Gate of Departure."

Content's Soul

The guidebook comprises 160 pages crafted from translucent bark. Written in a cheerful tone and interspersed with anecdotal quotes — ensuring the pilgrim remains in high spirits throughout their journey — its six chapters describe the necessary equipment and important instructions for using the book, as well as the commencement of the journey (1 the energy centers of the four elements (2–5 and the final destination (6). Each page within chapters 2 through 5 corresponds precisely to the days the Pilgrim Father spent with the respective element, ultimately totaling 120 days for the 1,200-kilometer journey.   The book serves simultaneously as a practical guide and as a personal travelogue for recording one’s own experiences, featuring an integrated day counter, an "honesty check," a physical sacrifice component, and a dream-vision tool with a self-correction mechanism. Each elemental chapter contains a humorous checklist of sights the traveler simply must see — or potholes they would be wise to avoid. Furthermore, the book offers invaluable insider tips regarding the living shell, the inner radiance and the horizontal nap.

Mental Foresight

The right equipment is vital for survival on a pilgrimage, so the guide recommends, using far-sighted examples, which items help to avoid dangers from the outset:
  • All-Element Cloak - a coat made of air silk could lead to an unwanted barbecue on Layida
  • Two or three pairs of spare socks - wet feet are a surefire way to get holy athlete's foot
  • Elemental Pilgrim's Staff - as an extension of your sense of touch when wading through mud
  • Miracle Salve - daily pilgrimage and prayer don't just lead to blisters on the feet
  • Lantern - so you can see the light even in the dark and don't trip over roots
  • Emergency Snacks - a rumbling stomach drowns out any spiritual Magic.

"Be sure to leave behind baggage such as an inflated ego, cooking pots, formal wear, know-it-all attitudes, or loose change; the rule for the realm of elemental pilgrimage is: anything that weighs you down at the wrong moment — or suddenly sends you flying — is nothing but unnecessary ballast."

Blind Feet

The first day of the pilgrim's journey begins at one of the four "Gates of Departure," located approximately 400 km from the World Tree. Here, the book must first be placed into position so that Chapters 2 through 5 can align themselves in the correct sequence and the individual dream focus can be established. The first and last 20 pages of the guide serve as fixed "Guardian Pages" — for despite all the whimsy, safety remains the paramount priority, and the pilgrim should inspect their equipment daily. Only the 120 central pages shift their positions, allowing the pilgrim to begin with their own elemental affinity. To guard against utter confusion, the "Eternal Leaf" provides an additional safeguard, acting as a magical bookmark that indicates the current day of the pilgrimage.

"You cheated? This is strictly forbidden during the pilgrimage! This penalty stamp weighs 'heavier than stone,' but you can get rid of it if you make an 'embarrassing confession' in front of other pilgrims. Do it, so that by the end, your book doesn't weigh more than it did at the start of your journey!"

From the "Gate of Departure" onwards, the route is marked with recurring pilgrim symbols, statues of Eqilateus, and spiritual indicator plants, ensuring that the pilgrim can virtually never lose their way. Depending on the dream focus selected at the gate, the route follows the Paths of Revelation (Air 1), Purification (Earth 2), Life (Fire 3), or Redemption (Water 4).   Once the pilgrim arrives at one of the four energy centers, that stage of the journey is officially validated with a living blossom stamp — either by one of the special stamping machines, or by a trained Elemental Sealer — and subsequently appears on the back cover of the pilgrim's book.   Furthermore, the traveler should be sure to read the "fine print" carefully to avoid the risk of receiving a penalty stamp — in the form of a sticky, black burr—for attempting to take a magical shortcut through the Mirror Gates and their associated Mirror cloud paths.

Shores of Truth & Spiritual Redemption

After 120 days, the pilgrim has made it, reaching Aqitalú — the Island of the Elements. The first port of call for blistered feet and weather-beaten faces is an antique-looking pilgrim village, designed to evoke for travelers the illusion of the original settlement established over 10,000 years ago. At the center of the village stands the "120-Day Hall," where — following a verification of the pilgrim's guidebook—a well-deserved diploma appears on the spine of the book, and the path to the Gate of the World Tree is finally unlocked.   This gate offers the distinct advantage of guaranteeing pilgrims a safe journey to the temple, sparing them from having to endure — or be overwhelmed by — the unspiritual clamor of the streets, the greed of bandits, or the queues at the temple gates of Aqila, the World Capital. For after such a journey, there is nothing the pilgrim desires more than to visit the World Tree with its colossal canopy, to linger in its shade, and to offer prayers at the tomb of the Great Pilgrim Father within the Holy Temple of Aqila.

You’ve done it — you have reached the final page of your companion guide. We are proud of you!
Yet this book served merely as your guide to the wilderness and the spiritual experiences found therein. If you wish to explore the City of Elements as well, you simply must purchase our guidebook, "Between Blessing and Spectacle: Elemental Wonders Without the Hellish Urban Swarm" — to survive that monster of a city.
May your blessings shield you from the spectacle, and may your purse strings always hold fast!
