Kuiper Flotilla

The Kuiper Flotilla is a loose collection of voidships, lost, adrift, and eternally wandering the fringes of the Protium Shore at the edge of the Great Constellation. The humans aboard are some of the last of their kind, refugees from a fallen civilisation with nowhere to go, no world to claim upon which they could build anew. Little by little, year by year, their motley fleet decays just a little bit more as systems age and wear out, many of which now beyond the point of refurbishment or replacement with the facilities they still possess.   They maintain a tenuous relationship with the dragons of the Great Constellation, who mostly see the flotilla as a collection of drifters and vagabonds. Some trade does occur, but for many their reputation is forever tainted by a perceived connection to the Kuiper Corsairs, not helped by the fact that some of the flotilla's voidship-of-the-line escorts have been confirmed to have defected to the latter.

Leadership

The flotilla is effectively split into two halves between the civilian vessels and their military escort, with each half having their own separate leadership structures.   The civilian leadership takes the form of a parlimentary republic composed of representatives from all of the voidships in the flotilla and led by a First Minister aboard the Star of Rigel. The current First Minister is the long serving Nathan Gyles.   The military escort leadership takes the form of a traditional naval heirarchy, and is largely unchanged from its origin as the Royal Solar Navy's Kuiper Fleet. By tradition, the First Space Lord commands the Flotilla's escorts from aboard the venerable Third Rate, Victory. The current First Space Lord is the relatively young Emma Vance.

Vessels Of The Flotilla

The Kuiper Flotilla is comprised of a varied assortment of voidships from various parts of their fallen civilisation. The majority of the rated voidships, and the original core escort of the flotilla, originated from the Royal Solar Navy's Kuiper Fleet. The remainder are from other sources that joined the flotilla on its long exodus, primarily the Marine Etoile.

Voidships-Of-The-Line

Zeroth Rate Dreadnaughts

Sometimes referred to as Dreadnaughts, Zeroth Rates are the largest voidships-of-the-line still in service to the Kuiper Flotilla. Commissioned as prestige vessels and flagships for their navies of origin, their size and firepower puts them outside of the common rating system into a rating of their own.
  • Gloire
  • Tiwaz
  • Warspite
  • First Rates

The largest voidships-of-the-line under the common rating system. Despite her namesake, Dreadnaught is too small to be classed as a Zeroth Rate Dreadnaught and instead joins the ranks of the First Rates.

These are large, Zeroth Rate sized voidships that, whilst being exclusively naval in origin, serve purposes other than being floating cannon batteries, such as carrying interceptor swarms or being tenders for torpedo armed voidboats.
  • Ark Royal
  • Eagle
  • Sovereign
  • Wodanaz
  • Defections

These vessels have mutinied and are no longer affiliated with the flotilla. Some are confirmed to have defected to the Kuiper Corsairs, however the fate of others is still unknown.

    Colony Arks

The largest of all the civilian voidships, these colossal vessels were originally constructed as generational arks with the intent of founding new colonies on distant worlds. Now, after the catastrophic collapse of their civilisation, these five voidships contain the vast majority of their species' remaining population, doomed to wander the stars along the edge of the Protium Shore.
  • Star of Arcturus
  • Star of Barnard
  • Star of Formalhaut
  • Star of Rigel
  • Star of Vega
  • Star Liners

These voidships are smaller than the colossal colony arks, but far more numerous. Originally built as interstellar passenger transports and luxury cruise liners, these vessels now fulfill a similar purpose in housing and transporting the remaining civilian population. Unlike the colony arks, they are not self-sufficient and rely on constant resupply.
