The Stillness

The Stillness is the most severe sentence that may be imposed upon a lawful spellcaster within much of the civilized world. Reserved only for those who have committed the gravest magical crimes or who pose an enduring threat to society, the ritual permanently severs an individual's connection to the Unheard Song, forever depriving them of the ability to consciously manipulate Essence. Though the body and mind remain intact, the condemned can never again cast magic, nor experience the profound resonance that spellcasters describe as the unseen cadence beneath reality. Its effects extend beyond the loss of magic, diminishing the profound resonance once found in music, prayer, nature, and countless quiet moments of everyday life.
Unlike imprisonment or execution, The Stillness is not intended as an act of vengeance, but as the irrevocable removal of a power deemed too dangerous to wield. The sentence may be carried out only under the authority of The Arcane Registry, following exhaustive legal proceedings and the unanimous approval of the highest judicial and magical authorities. Because of its permanent nature, it is reserved for only the most exceptional cases and is regarded as one of the gravest responsibilities entrusted to the Registry.
Despite its lawful purpose, The Stillness remains one of the most controversial practices in Ayn. To many spellcasters, it is considered a fate worse than death. Those subjected to the ritual often describe an indescribable emptiness, as though something fundamental has been forever lost. Music no longer stirs the soul as it once did, the rhythm of rain becomes little more than falling water, and the quiet comfort once found in the wind, the sea, or laughter seems forever beyond reach. Though they continue to live, many speak of existing in a world that has grown immeasurably quieter, forever aware that a harmony they once knew has fallen silent.

Participants

The High Registrar
The High Registrar serves as the chief officiant of The Stillness. They are responsible for confirming that every legal requirement has been satisfied, reading the formal sentence, and authorizing the commencement of the ritual. Though they preside over the ceremony, they do not perform it alone, serving instead as the embodiment of the law.

The Twelve Registrars
Standing in a perfect circle around the condemned are twelve senior officials of the Arcane Registry.
Each Registrar represents one aspect of magical civilization. Rather than chanting, they maintain the intricate lattice of Essence required to safely sever the condemned's connection to the Unheard Song.

The Condemned
The condemned is not gagged, hooded, nor humiliated. Instead, they are afforded the dignity of facing the ritual openly.
Before the ceremony begins they are granted three rights:
  • To speak any final words.
  • To request the presence of a lawful spiritual advisor.
  • To hear the sentence read in full.
These rights are never denied.

The Witness of the Faith
This witness is a senior cleric belonging to a temple approved and recognized by the Arcane Registry. Their purpose is to provide a level of spiritual comfort otherwise missing from the proceedings.
Their role is to:

  • Offer final rites or prayers if requested.
  • Bear witness that the sentence has been lawfully carried out.
  • Remind those present that justice must never be divorced from compassion.
Depending on the condemned's faith, this cleric may come from a different temple, provided that temple is recognized by the Arcane Registry.

The Silent Attendant
Whenever possible, the Silent Attendant is a trusted companion chosen by the condemned. Should no suitable individual be available, the Registry appoints a neutral attendant to fulfill the role. They are not allowed to speak, cast spells, or carry any items other than a robe afforded by the Registry itself. Their purpose is to remain close enough that, should the condemned falter, collapse, or require support afterward, someone is there. This is an act of mercy to allow support for such a harrowing ritual.

The Spellwardens
A small contingent of veteran Spellwards accompanies the condemned into the chamber. Their responsibilities are more protective than ceremonial, serving to escort the condemned, maintain the security of the chamber, intervene should the ritual become unstable, and protect the registrars.
"The emptiness I've seen behind the eyes of those who have gone through The Stillness is a hollowness I wouldn't wish on my worst enemies. May the Gods have mercy on their souls..."
Purpose
The Stillness exists to permanently revoke a spellcaster's ability to wield magic when they have proven themselves too dangerous to do so responsibly.
