Spellwardens

The Spellwardens are an elite civil law enforcement organization operating under the authority of The Arcane Registry, entrusted with investigating magical crimes, apprehending dangerous spellcasters, and safeguarding the lawful practice of magic throughout the civilized world. Though often mistaken for soldiers or inquisitors, the Spellwardens are neither. They are highly trained investigators, peace officers, and specialists whose expertise lies in understanding, countering, and safely containing the manipulation of Essence.
  Unlike conventional guards, the Spellwardens are equipped and trained specifically to confront magical threats. Their duties range from locating unregistered spellcasters and executing lawful warrants to recovering forbidden artifacts, investigating magical disasters, and responding to incidents involving corrupted or uncontrolled Essence. Every Spellwarden is expected to resolve conflicts with discipline and restraint, employing specialized techniques, equipment, and anti-magical magic designed to subdue rather than kill whenever circumstances permit.
  Recognizable by their distinctive ceremonial attire and the great brass key they bear as a symbol of their office, Spellwardens have become enduring symbols of both justice and accountability. Their arrival often signifies that an ordinary crime has become something far more dangerous, for where the city watch maintains the peace, the Spellwardens preserve the integrity of reality itself.

Spellwardens are seen less as deadly and more as inevitable. Their purpose is not to kill wayward spellcasters but rather track, contain, and capture them so they may be brought to justice through the proper channels. Because of this, their greatest assets are not measured in how lethal they can be, but rather how effective they are at subduing their quarry. Their spells are less 'Fireball' and more 'Hold Person', or 'Counterspell' or 'Dispel Magic'. Pragmatism trumps glamour, thus they rely on protocol and discipline rather than shock and awe.
