Mon Vulkarna
Overview
Mon Vulkarna the largest of the mountains in the north west of Aldenia, these mountains are under the protection of Khul Boldir, the Dwarven capital. Mon Vulkarna is also regarded as the tallest volcano in the world, and the seat of power for the former goddess of fire, its namesake, Vulkarna.
Geography
Mon Vulkarna is just over 12,000 ft from base to peak, though most approaches involve adjoining mountains, so the total trip to the top usually occurs from a base camp from one of those. Access to Mon Vulkarna is strictly prohibited, anyway, aside from special ventures from the Scholar's Guild.
The mountain range it resides in is in a cold and temperate region of Aldenia, in the far north-west of the continent. Mon Vulkarna is rarely snow-capped, though, due to the nascent heat that emanates from within. It is also a literal hotbed for nascent fire elementals, and creates that have taken on aspects of fire in some way, such as the Molten Worm.
History
Mon Vulkarna erupts infrequently. There have only been two recorded eruptions, the last of which was millennia. Scholars fear this means Mon Vulkarna is overdue. Due to its size, it is considered to have been the 'home' of Vulkarna, the former goddess of fire, who was supposedly banished for inciting the Primordial Uprising. The recent discovery of a ruined temple to Vulkarna on the slopes of the volcano has only emboldened that belief. Since her banishment, those of a superstitious nature fear than an eruption is a sign of her breaking free of her prison, whilst others see the building inferno within a representation of her burning anger at being held captive rising to the point of literally blowing its top.
During the Cataclysm War
Mon Vulkarna was believed to be the base for the red dragon known as Cieris, the Immolator, though his nest was never found. The culminating fight between Cieris and Ysiron, the benevolent silver dragon raged within the mountain range with Mon Vulkarna as its backdrop. Cieris was felled in that seemingly final fight as they disappeared from view.
The Resurrection of Cieris
Recently, in 584PC, Mon Vulkarna was the site of the resurrection of Cieris, Cieris's son, Cyrind, found both the Bowl of Transference and the Soul Gem that Cieris's soul was poured into, and with the coerced help of a kidnapped Arthur Greyson, an expert in Imbuement, succeeded in his attempted ritual to return his father. Cieris was battled off by his ancient rival Ysiron, and Cyrind was dealt with by The Grey Knights and Arthur Greyson, and reduced to dust. Cieris fled and has not been seen since.
