Death Trees
The trees known as Death Trees exist only in the Death Woods in Umela. The rarity is the main reason why it is believed the trees originally came from another realm, transferred over during a Realm Conjunction. It is unknown if the trees themselves are dangerous, or if they are only home to dangerous beasts, which is where the Death Woods gets its name.
Basic Information
Anatomy
The trees in the Death Woods appear like many of the needle-leaved pine trees throughout Avarha, but they have bark that is nearly black in color and produce pine cones that are blood red. They also tend to be covered in a thick, red-leafed ivy. Because it is nearly impossible to study the forest itself without death or severe injury, it is unknown if the ivy is its own species of plant or a secondary type of leaf grown by the Death Trees.
Genetics and Reproduction
New Death Trees grow where blood red pine cones drop from parent trees. This has allowed the Death Woods to expand slowly over time, now encroaching on the town of Moz'ki and the road that leads there.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Legends abound about Death Trees requiring blood to survive, but the name only comes from the lethalness of the Death Woods. The forest is full of monsters and beasts that will kill anyone who enters or ventures too close. While the increased richness of a soil fueled by decomposition would help any plant to grow, it is unlikely that the trees consume blood or bodies in the same way an animal would. It is most likely that the trees need water, sunlight, and soil like any other tree in Avarha. Until the trees can be studied safely, that is what can be assumed.
