Liguri

The Liguri or Ligures are the colony of Umbrians closest to Penumbria. They make up a decent amount of the military force of the Penumbrians due to their ability of Lithomancy and militarized culture.

Q1. Who are they and what do they look like?

  • They are a Northern colony who inhabit the Penumbrian lava tunnels
  • Some of them have Argyric skin due to mixing with Penumbrians
  • Often grow lichens and flowers at a safer rate than other Umbrians, due to the stable outside climate
  • Bruised skin, compound eyes or ocelli that are better developed
  • They have hair like insects and arachnids do

Q2. What are their senses or perceptions?

  • They have better eyesight than further underground Umbrians due to contact with the surface
  • They can smell different metals and don't need a lot of organic food to live
  • Though not as strong as Antumbrians, their skin toughens into cartlidge if they stay outside long enough and protects them from breaks, causing their skeleton to grow inside out (risky and dangerous, but this is what the warriors do)
  • They are born with rocks for teeth and over their lifetime they become diamonds

Q3. Where are they in your setting?

  • They live mainly in the lava tunnels which surround the Borealis territory, this is their natural home
  • A minority live in the bottom of the craters near the waters with the Penumbrians
  • Those who go through Inside-Out Syndrome work in the Green Haloes and surface areas often as militia

Q4. How do they survive in their environment?

  • They have an even higher resistance to infections and poisoning than the Penumbrians
  • They are not however, immune to parasites and one can easily take them over and cause them to become Indifferent Shadows
  • They can basically live off bare minimum sustenance and derive their energy from a variety of ways
  • They are very wealthy due to their mining operations which allow for a lot of the manufacturing which goes on in the area
  • High fecundity among the birthing class as they reproduce in a similar way to ants and wasps, but in particular the Ligures have access to natural water which allows for the queen to live longer

Q5. What is their general attitude?

  • They are highly organized and follow a rigid caste, however sometimes relax it to fit in with the Penumbrians (but of course, only certain families and castes....
  • They're willing to make money at the expense of others, especially their own Umbrians
  • They try very hard to appear sympathetic and idyllic to outsiders
  • Very punitive society but also very orderly
  • "We're only as strong as our weakest member"
  • Matriarchal

Q6. How do they feel about the other peoples?

  • They get along with the Penumbrians due to the relaxed and open nature of the agrarian folk as well as a past history of collaboration
  • In fact, crimes against Penumbrians are treated more harshly than against their own people
  • They don't get along with any of their southern neighbours, the other Umbrian tribes, who have shut them out of most of the main tunnels.
  • They can only access the rest of Umbria through tunnels from Tega Sula and ones which go straight down to the core of the planet and are infinitly more dangerous
  • Ever so often they get one open again, but there's always a war that closes it back off

Foods & Cuisine

Due to their habitat and closeness to the Penumbrians, the Liguri grow organic food and process meat even though they eat neither. They are known for their Devil's Meat, which is entrails ground and cooked over a fire of coniferous branches and cones filled with salts and spices.

The one thing they will eat however, is fermented root/hair lichen if it has been dipped in oil or pickled in vinegar or wine. They often ground stone on top of these dishes too.
