Krachnau

High in the mountains of de Splijt, within an unnamed valley there is a famous glacier. The Krachnau. When the winter ends and spring arrives, a big chunk of ice will break down, tumbling down in the ravine beneath. The bowl of the valley creates the unique circumstance where the crack and the fall creates a low but loud sound that travels far over the mountain tops. People though the whole country can hear it. Not knowing the origin will make you think there is a thunderstorm approaching.

Origin of the name

Krachnau is named after the sound it makes. It comes from kraaknacht or in common crackling night. Because the glacier is hard to reach, the true cause of this phenomenon is unknown. At this point, only a few people have tried reaching it. At first the people did not really know what the sound meant, but over the years they discovered that this phenomenon happend at roughly the same time each year. Nowadays it is a common term known by almost everyone, especially farmers and people outside of the cities. This signals the true end of the winter and the beginning of the spring. It means the ground if fertile again. The people of Andeau will anticipate this event, because farmers can start farming again. Planting crops and wheats, releasing their cattle in the fields and work their land again. But first they celebrate by organizing a feast with a special dish and playing populair games with the community.

The sound

Most people describe the sound as a loud thunder without a flash and without rain. But every farmer will hear a distinct different in the sound. Because prior to the roaring sound of the fall there is a higher crackling sound to be hear. If you stand within the valley you probably catch ear damage. Luckily the glacier is hard to reach and most people do not even try.
