Elemental Sorcerers
Can be random, but is usually the result of a person infused, imbued, or aligned with primordial forces in their bloodline's history. In fact, the 'random' is usually that, too, but with a bastard child somewhere or a really quiet atavism that has gone long enough without showing to be forgotten.
Powers "come in" usually during pre-pubescence, between eight and twelve years old. Eight is considered early-average, seven and under is precocious, thirteen and up is late. Initial bursts may feature numerous elements, regardless of actual manifested and stabilized ability.
Depending on location, leyline, and bloodline, these sorcerers are usually fairly weak and can usually only control one or two of the Primordial Magic forces. Most of the time, they're taught to quell the magic and how to stop themselves from using it on accident, and they go on to never use it, or only use it as a sort of party trick, maybe learning small practical applications like lighting candles or watering crops. A few stronger ones will need coaching on deliberate use to prevent accidental discharge, and may even be taught to actively stifle it. Some never can actively use it at all and they only ever manifest it in things like their appearance, a physical resistance to the element, or being able to sense others' magic somehow.
On the other end of the spectrum, some are so powerful that stifling it is impossible, and they must either undergo intense training to get it under control, or.... they generally self-destruct before their later teen years. Emotional turmoil without proper self-regulation and insanely powerful magic usually don't mix.
The trained are often pursued by those who study magic, those who study the primordials, and often time the local military will ask after them as well. As such, these sorcerers often feel hunted, regardless of intention. Fortunately, being that strong lends well to adventuring, traveling, and escorting The Scribes around between Repositories
Expressions of magic can be as individual as the person wielding it. There can be commonalities between family members, and sometimes with teachers, but oftentimes the only thing that one can teach is technique, and the manifestation afterward would be very different. The way one uses it is often a personal adaptation from what one was taught, due to 'no one way', as one's magic is often one's own. (Much like a voice is a voice. They have the same general function, they have the same general use, you can make the same sounds with two different voice boxes--but no two are the exact same, and you have to do different things to different boxes to get the same result.)
