Echoes
The Echoes are a species composed mostly of Warping magic. They are the product of The Aspect of Endings and they live on an island near the North Pole, as the magic is denser there and there's less competition for it.
Echoes cannot breed with meatier creatures, and their own breeding cycle is somewhat mysterious as they do not exchange DNA but instead other aspects of their being, in particular the kind of particulates of magic they're made of.
To breed is to die. Echoes usually live a few hundred years and determine that they're tired now and would like to rest, and when this happens, they tend to slow down a lot and very passively "be" until they happen upon somewhere nice to be still.
The cellular make-up of the Echoes is unique to them, and I don't give The End enough credit for it. Their self-replication relies on a constant feed of magic from the outside, more or less like gills drawing the air from water. They have to be in constant motion, similarly, lest they become lethargic. They cannot die this way, they merely enter a torpor until they are flushed with magic again or they become part of the next generation. The cells are free-floating, contained in a field of magic produced by the consciousness of the Echo.
An Echo in torpor is inert, inactive, and looks more or less like a shiny cloud. Other Echoes at the end of their life cycle will find another in torpor and join them, and this will eventually coalesce into a really big, shiny, multicolored cloud.
The cells are, for the most part... not conscious so much as active. They have a goal, they are aware of their environment, and what they want is as any organic creature--to feed and reproduce. In torpor, the cells are given free reign on an individual level that allows them to join the mass and seek out the best place to survive like that. (Think fire to accelerant or lightning to metal or water downhill), until another, new Echo condenses into shape and is "born".
When enough of these are collected, the cells left over will disperse or imbue themselves into the crowd, and the baby Echoes emerge.
Torporous Echoes usually reproduce after four or five join the nest, but there have been collections as big as twenty and as small as two.
The nature of their being is simple, and their experience of the world is not dissimilar to most creatures. They do not sleep, but they do need restful periods. They can withstand immense cold and heat, but magnetism is painful to them, as they are structurally unsound and the pulls on them are stronger than on other creatures. Silver has no special effect on them, but they cannot cross over running water that well, and leaving their native North Pole area has detrimental effects.
They often live in small groups and travel to keep the food fresh.
