The Lantern Archive

The Lantern Archive is an antiquarian bookshop whose very walls seem steeped in memory. The air carries the unmistakable scent of aged leather and something older—like the breath of forgotten ghosts.

The shop’s shelves hold an array of obscure histories, forgotten religious texts, early Pelorian scriptures, and treatises in forgotten tongues. Some books are so old their titles have worn away; others bear strange sigils or unfamiliar binding styles from distant lands. Many come seeking answers, though some find that knowledge has its own hungers.

Interior

Books fill every inch of the shop, rising in precarious towers like trees in an untouched forest. Narrow aisles weave between them, illuminated by brass lanterns whose warm, amber light flickers softly against carved oak shelves. Rolling ladders creak along ceiling rails, granting access to the highest tomes.

Sister Avelyn

The Archive is run by Sister Avelyn, a half-elf archivist with ink-stained fingers and a serene presence.

Clad in muted robes and silvery prayer cords, Avelyn greets visitors with a gentle cadence. When spoken to, she tends to pause for a heartbeat too long—clearly thinking—before answering in a gentle, precise voice that betrays a deep love of language and history. Her knowledge of Valoria’s history, obscure gods and dead languages is unparalleled, although she rarely volunteers information unless asked directly.

Forgotten Histories

The Lantern’s most curious wares, however, are its “unclaimed journals”—diaries recovered from long-abandoned homes, ruins and estates with no living heirs. These journals vary from mundane to unsettling: the recollections of a mercenary in the Eberland army, the field notes of a lost explorer, the final thoughts of a paranoid scholar who feared he was being watched.

Sister Avelyn claims she only collects what wishes to be found, hoping to give meaning to lives which would otherwise be lost to time.
