Weave Channel Deformation

Dunathrectasis

Weave Channel Deformation, also known as WCD and as Dunathrectasis in medical terminology, is a Dunathric condition where the Weave Channel fails to activate and/or form properly, resulting in an asymmetrical Channel. When a Weave Channel forms asymmetrically, it inhibits a spellcaster's ability to properly channel their spells, often resulting in a drop in spell efficiency, a restriction in the Tier of spell they can cast, or in rare cases complete failure to cast at all.

WCD is typically not fatal, and while it seriously inhibits spellcasting ability it does not outright prevent it unless the Deformation is particularly severe. It also does not technically impact the Spellcasting Vessels themselves, as they form and disperse at instruction of the Weave Channel, and the deformity of the Channel is what prevents them from forming. However, repeated incidents of conditions such as Exdunathricytosis can lead to weakness in the Weave Channel, thus causing WCD.

WCD is an extremely rare condition, with around 1 in 5000 spellcasters experiencing some form of it in their lifetime. WCD can be cured, but it requires a strict treatment regime and complete abstinence from spellcasting for the duration of the treatment.

Causes

Weave Channel Deformation typically arises when the Weave Channel has been subjected to repeated stress. This stress can come from any number of sources, including but not limited to Exdunathricytosis, chronic Mana Hiccups, improper treatment of Mana Overload, exposure to Dunamic Anomalies, or Dunamic Embolisms.

Symptoms

WCD typically manifests as an inability to properly form, control, or channel non-innate spells. It can on occasion be confused with other conditions, such as Postvesical Mana Cessation or SVA. When viewed by Enhanced Truesight, or by the use of specialist spells which are only available to those of certain Vocational Paths, the Weave Channel can be seen as being incomplete or asymmetric in shape, which is what sets WCD apart from other conditions.

Treatment

Treatment of WCD requires complete abstinence from spellcasting and strict adherence to a regime of potions that encourage the repair and stabilisation of the Weave Channel.

Prognosis

In most cases, WCD is not fatal, though it can lead to spellcasting inhibitions. Most patients with WCD make full recoveries within 7 days of beginning treatment. Additionally, it is not considered overly dangerous to continue to cast spells while suffering from WCD, though it is not recommended as it can exacerbate the Deformity and increase treatment time.

Sequela

For a short time during and after treatment, WCD can cause Mana Leakage from the Weave Channel as the Dunamocytes are repaired and/or replaced. In very rare instances, WCD has led to Mana Rot of the Weave Channel which can further lead to other, more serious conditions.
