My Shield and Shadow

by The Storm Raven Aria Nytraven

I have named him my fiancé. The word feels heavier than any title I carry.

Daereth has stood at my side since before I understood what it meant to be seen. Long before I learned the cost of command, before storms answered me and shadows learned my shape, he was already there, quiet, immovable, inconveniently perceptive.
For most of my life, I understood him as my shield. That was simple. Shields are defined by direction and purpose. They interpose. They endure. They break so others do not. I relied on that clarity more than I admitted.
Now it is insufficient.
After Hithfaer, after the siege and the long hours where the dead tested our resolve and found it wanting, I can no longer pretend his role is singular. He does not merely protect what I am. He protects what I am becoming—and, when necessary, he tempers it. He does not obey blindly. That is why I trust him.
In battle, he adjusts to me rather than restraining me. In council, he speaks rarely, but when he does, it is because the cost of silence would be greater. He has learned the cadence of my decisions, the moment when my restraint hardens into resolve. He moves with that knowledge, never presuming to command it.
That is not the behavior of a retainer. Nor is it the behavior of a man seeking power through proximity. It is a partnership, earned, tested, and sharpened under pressure.
When I look at him now, I see not only the man who will stand between me and death, but the one who will stand beside me when survival is no longer the question. He has seen me fail. He has seen me bleed. He has seen me choose outcomes others would not forgive, and he has not flinched.
I do not confuse this with romance untested by consequence.
This bond was forged in storm, ruin, and responsibility. Love, if it is to endure, must survive such things. I believe this one will. He does not ask for softness from me. That, more than anything, makes the choice possible.
As my fiancé, he will be watched more closely than ever. Questioned. Resented. Tested. Some will say I elevate him because of sentiment. Others will assume he influences my rule.
They are wrong.
I chose him because he already stands where power gathers and does not reach for it. Because he understands that love does not replace duty, it endures alongside it. Because when I step into shadow or storm, I know exactly where he will be. Close enough to stop me if I am wrong. Near enough to follow if I am not. Does he realize he may have more power over the tempests within me than I?
