Appearance
Physical Description
Edran stands 6 feet tall with a lean, athletic frame rather than the frail build many expected from a wizard. Firm shoulders from shield drills, a tight waist from campaign marches, and enough muscle through the arms and back to handle armor, sword, and spellbooks without looking overburdened. He has the build of a skilled fighter, not a battlefield brute, but anyone expecting a fragile scholar would soon be dissapointed.
Apparel & Accessories
Edran’s field attire centers on well-fitted scale mail worn beneath the blue livery of Callandor. Silver-white stags mark his shield, surcoat, and campaign banners. His armor is practical rather than ornamental, but never disheveled. Buckles are always aligned, leather oiled, cloth brushed clean even when conditions dont seem to allow, and even his grimoire case looks meticulous rather than read daily. When not armored, he favors heavy wool surcoats, officer’s riding coats, and practical tunics in Callandorian blue, grey, or cream, usually belted with a map case, writing kit, and spellbook close at hand
Mentality
Personal history
Edran Valehurst, is the second son of Marcellus Valehurst and Ysabel Valehurst, a prosperous merchant family based out of Sarnia. The Valehursts made their fortune in foreign trade, grain contracts, winter fodder, lamp oil, spare tack, and the unglamorous goods that kept armies alive between battles.
Marcellus did not buy Edran a squireship out of patriotism. He expected his son to learn military logistics from the inside: who signed supply requisitions, which officers favored which contractors, how border forts reported shortages, and where a clever family might place itself in the Crown’s long struggle against the Wolfblood Kingdom. Edran was meant to become the family’s polished military contact, not a hero.
His mother, Ysabel, expected more refinement from the arrangement. She wanted Edran to return with officerly manners, useful friendships, fluency in military correspondence, and perhaps enough reputation to lift the Valehurst name above common trade. To her, a son in livery was an investment in respectability.
Instead, Edran proved inconveniently talented. During his squireship, Edran served under Sir Garran Harth, a hard-tempered knight of the southern marches who had little patience for merchant sons purchased into service. Garran expected Edran to fail, but soon noticed the boy’s discipline, quick grasp of supply routes, talent for languages, and unsettling ease which he picked up simple cantrips from his retinues Wizard. Rather than waste him as a ceremonial squire, Sir Garran drilled him hard in sword, shield, and discipline. As the boy grew Sir Garran used his own recommendation to place Edran in an exchange program sending him to the Altarian Magocracy as a candidate worthy of formal magical training. Once placed under Altarian trainers, he became a quick student of spellcraft, swordplay, and strategic theory, eventually earning his place as a War Mage of Callendor.
While his family saw potential opportunity in his rise, Ysabel was the first to truly realize that his talent would move him to places of ever increasing danger. Her letters pleading for his return would eventually go unanswered as Edran earned his position and departed for his first full assignment upon the frontier.
Education
Edran Valehurst’s first education was commercial. As a boy in Sarnia, he was trained in figures, weights, inventories, and contracts. Marcellus expected his sons to understand coin before honor. Edran learned to calculate wagon loads, grain spoilage, fodder needs, port tolls, tariffs, interest, and profit margins with relative ease. His mother added a polish to this education, to write eloquently, speak softly, deal fairly, and the proper handling of families who believed trade useful but merchants distasteful.
His squireship under Sir Gerran changed that path. Gerran had little patience for a merchant’s son and he treated Edran more harshly than the boys born to martial families in his service. Edran was made to clean tack, copy patrol reports, carry messages, inventory stores, maintain arms, and stand through shield drills until his arms shook. Yet Gerran noticed that Edran did not merely memorize orders he understood them. In addition Sir Gerran noticed when Edran had free time, he would help his units Wizard and the young squire mastered simple cantrips with ease. Edran first felt Sir Gerrans ire was a hardship but instead found the mans interest in him even more punishing. Edran was given harder tasks, more training, and higher expectations then other squires of the camp, and he met each of them.
At Altaria, Edran advanced quickly but unevenly. He excelled at spell theory, languages, campaign history, logistics, strategic assessment, and structured swordplay. He struggled in practiced skirmishes and battles in formations. He could lay forth a flawless plan, ensure all his men were supplied, in proper position, enemy movements observed, but as soon as the chaos of the engagement occurred his carefully laid control was torn asunder.
Intellectual Characteristics
Edran’s intellect is disciplined, structured, and practical. He favors reducing uncertainty into patterns he can study, measure, and prepare for. He is a quick learner with a strong grasp of systems and he favors careful preparation over instinctive improvisation.
Morality & Philosophy
Edran’s belief is rooted in duty, competence, and that privilege only has worth when it was put to use. While not naïve to the world of nobles and commerce he despises wasteful cruelty, vanity in command, and men who spend lives carelessly to protect their pride or position. His philosophy is to prepare well, preserve what can be preserved, serve with discipline, and never confuse personal advancement with actual worth.
Personality
Motivation
Edran’s personal motivation is to prove that he is more than a merchant family’s purchased foothold in the army. He wants to earn his place through competence, courage, and usefulness. Beneath that ambition is a quieter loyalty, he wants to become indispensable to the Commander he serves, not only as an aide and War Mage, but as someone trusted with the burdens, doubts, and dangers that rank demands.
Quotes & Catchphrases
“A poor plan costs coin. A careless one costs lives.”
"Disorder in appearance suggests disorder elsewhere."
Savvies & Ineptitudes
Edran is very good at reading rank, mood, and social leverage. He knows when to flatter, when to yield, when to phrase criticism as assistance. He also excels at making nobles, officers, merchants, and quartermasters feel respected while quietly steering them toward a better decision.
Edran struggles when conversation became personally intimate rather than formal or useful. He can negotiate contracts, brief lords, and survive courtly dinners, but direct affection, jealousy, embarrassment, or romantic attention often leave him stiff, over careful, and far less articulate than usual.
Likes & Dislikes
Edran likes strong black tea cut with a little honey, hard cheeses, spiced sausage, and the sort of dense travel bread officers complain about but soldiers actually survive on. He has a private fondness for old marching songs, especially when sung quietly around a low fire rather than performed formally. He also enjoys clean ink, well-bound books, sharpened pencils, polished buckles, and the rare satisfaction of seeing a plan unfold exactly as prepared.
He dislikes wasteful feasts held too close to hungry soldiers, officers who treat maps like decorations, and anyone who speaks of “acceptable losses” too freely. He has little patience for sweet wines, meade, greasy food, loud tavern music, poorly maintained gear, or men who mistake volume for authority. More personally, he dislikes being reminded that his position began with his family’s money, even when it is accurate.
Virtues & Personality perks
Edran takes responsibility seriously, especially when others depend on his preparation. He does not hide behind rank, youth, or excuses, and would rather admit an error early than let pride turn a small mistake into a dead soldier, failed mission, or broken trust.
Vices & Personality flaws
Edran measures his worth by function. When he cannot help, cannot solve the problem, or is forced to wait while others act, he becomes restless, self-critical, and quietly miserable. This same measure applies to others and when he judges someone as wasteful, vain, or incompetent, he may remain perfectly respectful while becoming difficult, obstructive, and cold.
Personality Quirks
Edran straightens buckles, cuffs, gloves, or straps when nervous, especially before speaking to someone of higher rank, and often when these items don't need attention. He is also known to corrects maps without asking, shifting tokens, smoothing corners, or turning them so they face the proper direction.
Hygiene
Edran is almost unnervingly immaculate for a man who lives in armor and travels with soldiers. Some of it comes from discipline, regular shaving, brushed hair, clean nails, polished buckles, oiled leather, and clothing folded or hung properly whenever possible. Magic however makes this standard easier to maintain. He uses simple cantrips like prestidigitation to clean mud from his boots, blood from his cuffs, soot from his armor, and ink from his fingers, leaving him looking prepared even after a miserable march. Around rougher soldiers this can make him seem vain, but to Edran it is a matter of readiness, "Disorder in appearance suggests disorder elsewhere," afterall.

Religious Views
Edran is a nominal follower of Kai, respectful of the faith but not especially devotional. He keeps the expected observances, uses the proper oaths, and would not mock priests or sacred rites, yet his belief is practical rather than passionate. Faith should strengthen discipline and steady frightened men
Hobbies & Pets
Edran enjoys translating old campaign letters, copying maps, and studying foreign military phrases, especially those tied to the eastern allies of the Jade Empire. He also has an almost meditative fondness for sharpening pencils and reordering his field notes. For actual leisure, he likes quiet games of cards or strategy boards.
Speech
Edran speaks with careful precision, favoring clean sentences, correct titles, and measured courtesy even when irritated. His voice is controlled rather than theatrical, with a faint merchant’s polish beneath military formality; he sounds like someone raised to negotiate before he was trained to command. In public he is deferential, concise, and composed, but in private his speech can turn dry, quietly cutting, or awkwardly over-formal when emotion gets too close.
