Ostrovi*

Those Who Belong to the Sea

Our grandfather's of old told us we swam under the waves in the metal creatures on the reef. We have never forgotten we ruled the sea.
— An Old Ostrovi

The Islands as they are dubbed by mainlanders are thought to be mysterious and uninhabited as those who go out to deep-sea often never come back or are so crazed nothing is believed. The Ostrovi themselves as far as they know the outside world doesn't exist. Sticking rather close to their island chain and never venturing out into the deep dark waters. When outsiders do find their islands they often believe the great spheres brought them to the Ostrovi and they treat them as their own people.

Kaptian: The overall leader of the Ostrovi, while guided by a council and their second in command they have the ultimate choice in what the Ostrovi do.
Admir Flota: Second in Command, often the next in line for Kaptian. Though there have been times it was the Kaptian as a sort of retirement from the head of the Ostrovi but still wishing to help the next Kaptian.

Herr Sphare: The head of the religion of the Ostrovi. Normally a man but a few women have held the title. Their opinion is sought after by the Kaptian as their knowledge of the Sphares is seen as key to their survival.
Herr See: A group of seven people who guide the Kaptian. Three from the Hotnik, three from the Baumeister, and one from the Zur Flota.

Hotnik: The main hunters of the Ostrovi, adapt at swimming, holding their breath for long periods of time, and spear hunting. The people must be fed and the Hotnik are the best of the best.
Baumeister: As the leading force of builders, they control what is built, what is deemed needed, and what crafters get work.

Zur Flota: What the general populace is referred to.

History

The Ostrovi started as angry bitter rivals of a cold angry era. The main bulk of the men coming from large steel monsters of the sea. The first few weeks were nothing short of the same war they were fighting when the Time Ripple tore them from their world.   Though they soon found themselves inundated with fresh new survivors. Even though with the new blood in, old blood would fade.   Once the two halves became as whole as they could the four main islands were lorded over by four main families. Two from each of the halves of the first people. While not always ideal way it is how everything shall be.

Cultural Customs, Traditions, and Taboos

Main Views of Life

Life is a cycle, their views follow in line with their religion. Though they do cultivate more than they should as they give some of their hauls back to the ocean and the spheres. Everything taken must be given back.

Courtship

So long as they are not part of the four families courtship can be short or long. Divorce is kept simple, if either party begins to feel that the relationship no longer serves a purpose they split ways, very little changes for any children as they are raised by all in the family.   For those who belong to one of the four families, marriage is often planned from the moment the child is born. A large feast and party are held on the day the families finally turn over their children. Divorce is never seen as an option, which often leads to infidelity but even then the couple will stay married to each other.

Views on Death

Death is just another part of the cycle. With one passing another life will walk on the islands. How bodies are handled is they are taken to a large cave that holds a massive vein of Darringtinium. Place in the cave they begin to process through Darringtinium Sickness at a rapid pace till the flesh is gone, generally a couple of days. This cave is only entered by those high in the Dom Sfery and even then only when someone has passed further on in the cycle.

Raising Young

Children are raised in a communal sense. Their parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles, as well as any living great grandparents. Cousins are often raised alongside each other.

Relgion

New blood comes. Old blood leaves. Such is the cycle. Such are the Spheres. They see the Time Ripples as a sort of higher entity. Every move made by them, who and what they bring to their islands. The Dom Sfery, as the religion is referred to, holds everything as an omen but only those who serve the Herr Sphare closely are seen as people who can understand or interpret them.

Other

  • Spherical objects are a staple of buildings for the Ostrovi.
  • Highly devoted members of Dom Sfery undergo body modifications to implant half-spheres under their skin generally on the back of the hands or forehead.

Everything goes and comes again, like the waves of the sea.
