Hidden Root
The Guardian of Thresholds and secrets is the shy twin of the Keeper of Echoes, and together with him She is the counterpoint to the Dawn Sister and The Two-Faced Goddess. Where they guard the threshold to the future, Her brother and Her guard the threshold to the past. When the time comes, it is Her who helps people close the door and stay behind, firmly rooted in the past now. Where Her brother is the seeker, she is the keeper. People come to Her and bring their treasure on their own for Her to safeguard, there is no need to yank it from them like He sometimes is forced to.
Her companions are the Moss Panther and the Glimmer Rabbit - two pets that couldn't be more different. Where the Moss Panther is calm, quiet and hides in plain sight to protect her underground realm, the glimmer rabbit is a flurry of activity, ever busy at expanding her realm and worrying about not having space enough for all the secrets and forbidden knowledge.
It is always a pleasure for her to arrive and find her brother's pet, the Bone Lynx, waiting for her on the moribund's lap, for this means there is piety and acceptance. These are the most pleasant passages for her and the dying, and she quietly offers to protect the secrets that should not be told, not even in this last moment. Time has no meaning in these moments, and together they sit down and figure out what she ought to keep, what belongs to her brother and what can be woven in the tapestry of ancient wisdom, before she sends the latter two on to her brother.
These fleeting moments are far from her only tasks, but those are the ones she treasures the most, giving peace and a sense of closure to people facing something that is so often feared. And they are the ones that are publicly known. Her clergy is small, but dedicated. Most Ouvezians don't think much about her, until a death looms over the community. The hours before belong to Her brother, while the hours after are dedicated to Her. If possible, the moribund will take care of his affairs and belongings in the hour before their death, but of course there is plenty of occasions where this is not possible. In this case, the things of the deceased are being left alone for a full day, while the Hidden Root gets invoked.
This is not always practical, for example, if someone suddenly dies in winter and they lived in a shared home. Yet, everyone does their best to honor this tradition and to not pay attention to the deceased's belongings, and more often than not, if there is a satchel or a trinket the deceased never wanted others to see or touch, it will have disappeared by the end of it.
Like the roots of the tree, hidden in the earth, however, much of her domains remains a secret only revealed to the initiated, for she guards the secrets of Ouvezian magic. To the casual observer, it may seem that Ouvezians are not a society gifted with magic, but in reality in is pervasive throughout their society.
Many practicioners do not realized that the small rituals they perform out of habit are magic - they just feel following these steps gives them better results. And it does, but it is not accidental. Others attribute their successes to divine blessings - and they are not wrong. But yet again, this, too is magic - granted and amplified by their deity, but magical nevertheless. It is no accident that for example budding oracles are sent to the temples of the Hidden Root as part of their training, for she teaches them the secret knowledge they need. In fact, for many priests and priestesses it is normal to spend time at a hidden temple every once in a while, always coming back stronger and more determined.
