caldera settlement

Location - The Margins. Situated on the largest of a small grouping of three islands. The other two are uninhabited by people. The city sits inside the ruins of what was once a mountain, but is now a shallow lopsided caldera, the results of long ago volcanic activity. The settlement is built along the inside of the caldera, on it's highest slope. which is on the northern most side.   Due to the volcanic nature of the island the soil is especially fertile and the inhabitants make good use of this. The islanders grow a variety of fruits and vegetables as well as sugar cane, they do a lot of trade with some of other islands within the margins that are not as fortunate to have such good soil.   The buildings are made of a mixture of wood and stone and sit on terraces which have been dug from the side of the caldera. Though the architecture is more functional than decorative, the buildings are well constructed and comfortably furnished. Although partially sheltered by the walls of the caldera, the buildings still need to withstand the sometimes violent storms that can blow through the islands.   Due to the dangers posed by pirates or more often marauders, the city and indeed the island as a whole must be able to defend itself in the event of an attack.   Caldera is known for its defensive capabilities, and its highly skilled warriors. Not only do they earn a steady income from food, sugar and rum exports they also make a good income from hiring out crews of mercenaries, usually as protection on trading vessels or defending other settlements.   Due to the abundance of sugar cane produced on the island the city has several industries what produce sugar and rum, which they also sell to the few brave merchant traders that sail these treacherous waters.
