Marithyn

Marithyn

(Children of the Tides)

Overview

The Marithyn are an elven people shaped by the sea itself. Dwelling beneath the waves in vast underwater enclaves, they are masters of survival in an environment defined by pressure, darkness, and constant motion. To the Marithyn, the ocean is neither benevolent nor cruel — it is eternal, and it must be respected.
While surface cultures often view them as graceful or serene, Marithyn society is defined by discipline, patience, and endurance. Life beneath the sea leaves no room for excess or waste. Every structure, ritual, and tradition exists to ensure survival across generations in a domain that tolerates no weakness.

Physical Characteristics

Marithyn possess sleek, athletic builds adapted for powerful swimming and prolonged exertion. Their skin ranges from pearlescent white and pale blue to muted teal or sea-glass green, often faintly reflective in low light.
Their hair flows freely in the water, commonly appearing in shades of silver, turquoise, deep green, or white, moving like drifting kelp or currents. Their eyes are large and luminous, adapted to low visibility, and range in color from pale aqua to deep ocean blue.

Culture and Society

Marithyn communities are structured around survival, navigation, and stewardship. Cities are built from coral, stone, and ancient ruins, reinforced and shaped to withstand tides, predators, and seismic shifts. Every citizen is expected to swim, navigate, and fight if needed.
Leadership is earned through experience rather than lineage, with elders and tide-guides holding authority. Music, storytelling, and ritual exist, but always serve practical purposes — teaching currents, preserving memory, or honoring loss at sea.
Surface interaction is limited and cautious. Marithyn do not fear land-dwellers, but they do not trust those who live beyond the ocean’s reach.

Faith and Worldview

The Marithyn worship Aqualon, Prime Deity of the Sea, as the embodiment of depth, endurance, and inevitability. According to Marithyn belief, Aqualon did not “gift” them the sea — he tested them with it, and those who survived became his people.
Worship is quiet and solemn, conducted through tidal observances, submerged shrines, and songs carried through water. Storms, shipwrecks, and deep-sea creatures are viewed not as omens of cruelty, but as reminders of the sea’s authority.

Regions

Marithyn settlements are found throughout Wakodia’s oceans, most commonly within deep reefs, submerged ruins, and trench-adjacent caverns. Their influence reaches the coasts of Stonefell and Ramaal, though permanent surface settlements are rare.
Those who dwell long above the waves are often seen as unsettled or incomplete by their kin.
