Wild Runner
Living in New Halvan is tough. It might be safe but it has always been on the verge of collapse. From the storms that ride in the clouds above or the creatures that emerge that stray too far from The Wilds. But there is hope, a group of warriors that have been around for centuries to stop that sort of thing from happening. The Taming Troops. If you care about history and timelines, they have been around longer than the city itself. Claiming it for us all, dug it out from the ground and fought off the wildlife that occupied this space. The troops are hardworking people, strong, brave, slightly terrifying at times. Need to be to survive outside the city walls. But what happens when one of the troops go missing? That’s where the Wild Runners come in.
The bravest, boldest maybe the craziest of all the Taming Troops. Handpicked by the generals with one purpose, protect the other troops. According to others, it works a little something like this. If a Taming Troop goes missing, gets separated from the rest of the group or simply get lost whilst in the wilds, the Wild Runners are sent after them. Given just a single day to find and retrieve the lost souls. After that, nothing. No extra time or additional help, they are simply abandoned. No exceptions. I know what you’re thinking, that sounds harsh but consider the facts. The Wilds are a dangerous place for anyone, the longer you are out there your chances of survival dwindles. The troops don’t want to waste time and resources looking for someone who strayed from the group. I know people who have been disappeared and been brought back by the Wild Runners too, usually due to ignorance and not realising the dangers of venturing without escorts. Returning to find a hefty fine from the Taming Troops, over a thousand gold. No wonder people stay in the city, that and there are far better ways to travel the kingdom without endangering yourself.
Currently in New Halvan there are two active runners. They can’t have every good soldier risking their lives at once. So, each runner has a year of active duty followed by a year of inactivity or ‘training’ for their next term of service. Mazeim and Iy-Ina are active at the moment but there hasn’t been a mission for a couple months. Word spreads quickly across the city when it does happen. As for those in training are Pr-Eecht the Stone Alum that traded life as a royal guard to be a Taming Troop. He has become quite popular among the people cause changing jobs like that is unheard of (plus my friends call him quite the looker). Then there is the Scanthian and Leanna Raggor. The first married couple to both be Wild Runners. All of them are famous throughout the city, they have dangerous jobs and are usually successful. Despite the fame and glory, I don’t want to imagine ever being a runner. Or a troop for that matter, I’ll stick to baking thank you very much.
