Rune Scribe

You continue to listen to the wise old man from down the road ramble on about runes and their place in the world. You make the mistake of asking yet another question. That question being if he could clarify the role of a rune scribe. He pauses his first thought, tells you not to get up and potters to the kitchen to boil a fresh pot of tea. Before he has fully entered the room, the wise old man begins yet another speech.
It is quite an honour to be a rune scribe, I must say. Yes, very prestigious job but one that takes a lot of time and practice. You see, the job itself requires you to learn a multitude of skills but I am getting a little ahead of myself. I mean you didn't even know what the Rune Codex was did you? Well, I suppose I better get you another drink to sip as I explain all about it.

The Job Itself

If I wanted to learn how to draw runes and learn everything there is to know about them, I would use the codex. But what if I didn't have the time to read through the entirety of the book and instead needed a rune in a matter of minutes or a few hours? Well the answer is obvious I hope, I would hire someone to do the work for me. And that is exactly what a rune scribe is. A Sorcerer or Alum whose job it is to learn all there is to learn about runes and draw them on paper, carve them into stone or add them to cursed items that might one day find themselves in the hands of a crazy ex girlfriend. Or so I have been told. The matter of the fact is that there are people all throughout Violem who do this sort of thing for a living and paid considerably well for it.   Now the exact day to day work really depends on the clients that come in. I have been told by a few scribing friends of mine that it mostly a lot of re-reading the codex and notes whilst they wait for someone to come in through the door. Then it may take them half a day, on average, to complete whatever it is that can been asked for. it is about choosing the right symbols for the right job, some are too complex to fit on small jewellery and some runes don't play nice with others. If one were to just draw any combination of runes without knowing the precise interaction, they might be forced to give a refund or two.

The Royal Scribe

Names of these scribes are spoken in the wind all the time, I would make the assumption almost every major city has one and a fair few prominent towns too. But one of the more, are you listening to me? Hmm? You look like you're about to fall asleep. Sit up straight and drink some more tea. Good, now where was I? Oh yes, But one of the more popular names throughout Cytal is former Royal Scribe of Drovvin, Dunlea. A lady that lived before now, sometime in the early to mid Dark Ages I believe, working on behalf of the Gentle King. She was offered the job by King himself you know. And she is the one responsible for a lot of the mountainous city's defensives. Yes, the story goes she created unique runes to protect the city into each and every brick used on the wall encapsulating the city. Quite impressive if you ask me, working for the majority of her life in the palace no less. Considered not just as a servant to the King but as a friend too. Her role was to follow the orders of the King and train a new generation of scribes which couldn't come soon enough because of what happened next. Surely you know about the Minauran Slaughter?
