A World Torn in Two
So what will happen if all the inhabitants of this glorified asteroid make a change?
What if...
The State of Things
Eclipsé
The Faeries have been pushed away. They have been, yet again, forced to hide away. Eclipsé never sees a brush of true sunlight. Never has it seen a rainbow streaking through the sky. But it has its own sort of beauty, as the keeper of the Heart, the steady puppeteer over the Shallows. Despite the roots of the Faeries, Eclipse has become their world. Something they can control.
By some, it is considered a world of chaos, wildness and power-crazed Aetherfaerie mania.
Others consider power, a crucial element that, if not exactly material, is thick in Valoren's atmosphere is the key element of Eclipsé's culture.
But to most, it is a dangerous, deadly mixture of the two that characterises the land of the Veins and Heart.
The Shallows
The Shallows are the outermost ridge of the asteroid that is Valoren, wearing their ignorance to the Faeries as a veil they are too afraid to remove. They speculate at the Heart, the Veins, they tell stories to try to rationalise. But really, the history they've crafted is just an elaborate lie they tell themselves to stay anchored to their world.
The Shallows is a paradise of ignorance -- but freedom in its ignorance.
A manufactured life that Humans have not yet come to terms with, there is a certain secret that they do not yet want to discover that plagues each Shallows-dweller.
It is the slave of a fickle Faerie's every whim, at total mercy to the minds of a Control Center Faerie.
A Clash
While the Faeries have learned to adapt to the lifestyle of living beside humans, there are shreds -- what is dismissed as little more than slivers -- of rebellion. Those who want change. In the Shallows, those who want answers.
An Abridged History
Prejudiced Aether
While on modern Eclipsé, the ability to wield Aether is a symbol of status and respect (to most, at least -- some anti-Aether Faerie organisations have been formed), historically, before the colonisation of Valoren, it was anything but. Those who could not control their power were scorned, citizens of the very lowest caste, and so-called 'sympathisers' became pariahs. Misogyny grew towards the Aetherfae -- mass killings, media censorship -- and ultimately, there was just one option.
The Hope of an Asteroid
This Asteroid was called FO-A17, by the Cross-Planetary Aetherless. But the Aetherfae saw it differently. To them, it was Eclipsé; a new dawn, a new hope. And they jumped at the oppurtnity. As it whizzed through their atmosphere, thousands used their Aether to catapult to its surface. They were considered untouchable by the cross-planetary Faeries, and so the simple act of pooling all of their Aether was successful in bringing the Asteroid to an ultimate slowed pace. However, this did not come without a price. Thousands more were killed from the exertion, and those who did survive had a tainted, cynical viewpoint on essentially everything.
A Beating Heart
To support life on their once-barren asteroid -- Eclipsé, the Faeries once again pooled their Aether -- but rather than the Kinetic Aether of bringing it to a stop, this was creation Aether. It allowed Humans to grow and develop, for animals to form. And above all else, it is what morphed Eclipsé, the realm of the freed Aetherfae, into Valoren, the planet in a constant tug-of-war.
Driven Away Again
A continuous cycle, as the Faeries consider it. One where there is no right decision, no correct choice. The escape route, once a beautiful fantasy of prosperity and freedom, had since become a prison of its own right, the newly-developed humans snuffing away the spark of hope for a new future -- one the Aetherfae could choose themselves. The Humans, once again in fear of what they could not understand, threatened the Faeries until they hid themseves away from the Shallows -- sealing their way from the overgrowth with what is now the Deadlands.
Toying and Teasing
However, if one were to describe the Aetherfae, they would say that they are not the type to give up. At least, not in the sense of giving up in entirety. While they have hidden away, they keep the miniscule fragment of control that is the Heart. They have full authority over the climate of the Shallows; and how they revel in their power. In a world that seems bleak, they can take the small consolement that is the way they still are the superior power, over the humans. They still have some fraction of power over the uncertain.
What Happens Next?
We don't know.
But something will happen.
And whatever does...
Will be revolutionary.
