Voice Projection is a divination spell focused on extending perception without altering the environment or the subject being observed. It does not influence thought, behavior, or outcome. It simply relocates the caster’s auditory perspective to the position of another creature, allowing sound to be perceived as if the caster were physically present at that location. The spell’s function is narrow by design, but its implications are far-reaching in situations where distance, privacy, or risk would otherwise limit awareness.
When the spell is cast, the caster selects a creature within sight and establishes a sensory link anchored to that creature’s position. This link does not connect to the creature’s mind and does not grant access to thoughts, intentions, or emotions. It is not telepathic in nature. Instead, it operates entirely through the caster’s own senses, extending hearing outward to a new point in space while leaving the caster’s physical body unchanged.
The caster perceives sound from two locations at once. Their immediate surroundings remain audible, while a second stream of sound is layered over it, originating from the chosen creature’s position. This dual input requires attention and control. An inexperienced caster may find the overlap distracting, especially in environments where both locations are active or noisy. The spell does not improve the quality of sound beyond what would naturally be heard at the target’s location. Volume, clarity, and obstruction all behave as they normally would. If the creature stands in an open space, the caster hears clearly. If the creature is separated from a conversation by distance or barriers, the caster hears only what would be audible from that position. The magic does not enhance hearing. Because the spell is tied to a creature rather than a fixed point, the source of sound moves as the creature moves. This creates a dynamic perspective that shifts in real time. A target walking through a crowded street carries the sound of that street with them. A target entering a quiet room produces a corresponding shift in what the caster hears. The spell does not stabilize or anchor the environment. It follows the subject.
The caster cannot control the orientation of perception beyond this attachment. The sound is experienced as if the caster were standing at the target’s location, but without the ability to reposition or adjust perspective independently. It allows the caster to monitor conversations without entering the space in which those conversations occur. This can be used in urban environments to follow individuals through crowds, in political settings to observe private exchanges, or in investigative contexts to gather details that would otherwise be inaccessible. The spell is also useful in coordination with allies.
By anchoring perception to a moving companion, the caster can maintain awareness of conditions beyond their line of sight. This can support timing, positioning, and decision making in situations where communication is limited or direct observation is not possible. While the spell does not allow for two-way communication, it provides a continuous stream of information that can inform the caster’s actions. There are limitations that define its scope.
The caster must maintain concentration to sustain the effect, which prevents simultaneous use of other concentration-based spells. The connection is also dependent on the target remaining on the same plane of existence. If the creature crosses that boundary, the spell ends immediately. These constraints ensure that the spell remains a tool of proximity rather than a means of bypassing fundamental separations. Environmental conditions at the target’s location remain fully relevant.
Loud noise can obscure important details. Quiet speech may be missed entirely. Barriers, distance, and movement all influence what can be perceived. The spell does not compensate for these factors. It transmits them exactly as they occur, requiring the caster to interpret incomplete or imperfect information when conditions demand it. Among practitioners of divination, Voice Projection is valued for its reliability and restraint.
It does not attempt to predict outcomes or reveal hidden truths beyond what is already present. It provides direct access to a specific form of information and leaves the rest to the caster. This makes it particularly effective in situations where subtlety is required and where the act of observation must remain undetected. The spell does not interfere with the world it observes.
It does not alter behavior, influence decisions, or change events. It extends awareness, allowing the caster to perceive what is already happening from a different position. Its effectiveness depends not on power, but on how that awareness is used. Voice Projection does not grant knowledge by itself. It places the caster in a position to acquire it.
