Signal Flare

Here I Am!

“I didn’t think anyone would see it. Storm rolling in, sky already turning on me. But I sent it up anyway, figured it was better than waiting to disappear. Ten minutes later I heard voices I never thought I’d be so happy to hear.”
— Dakki Wingwalker, Surveyor
Signal Flare is one of those spells that exists because sometimes subtlety is the wrong answer.   There are moments when quiet signals, careful planning, and measured communication fail. Distance grows too great, visibility too poor, or urgency too immediate to rely on anything that requires interpretation. In those moments, the need is simple. Be seen. Be heard. Make it unmistakable.   This spell answers that need with absolute clarity.   When cast, the flare does not hesitate or build. It launches upward in a clean, direct line, cutting through the air with a force that draws the eye even before it reaches its peak. The burst that follows is bright, deliberate, and impossible to ignore, accompanied by a sharp report that carries just far enough to reinforce what the light has already declared.   The display is brief, but it does not need to last.   Its purpose is not to illuminate for long periods or to provide sustained visibility. It exists to mark a moment, to create a point in space that demands attention. For that instant, anyone within range knows exactly where it originated, whether they were looking for it or not.   This makes it invaluable in environments where distance and obstruction complicate communication.   In open terrain, it can signal position across vast stretches, cutting through darkness or poor weather with equal effectiveness. In more confined or obscured settings, it provides a way to announce presence through barriers that would otherwise muffle or conceal more subtle signals. The flare does not negotiate with its surroundings. It asserts itself.   The light it casts on the ground is secondary, but not without use.   For a brief moment, the immediate area is illuminated clearly enough to reveal movement, position, and terrain. It is not enough to sustain visibility, but it can be enough to confirm what is nearby or to disrupt concealment at a critical moment. That flash of clarity, short as it is, often matters as much as the signal itself.   Because of its simplicity, the spell has found a place across a wide range of disciplines.   Explorers use it to mark locations or call for aid. Rangers rely on it to communicate across distance without needing to close that distance first. Artificers and others working in hazardous conditions use it as a safety measure, a way to ensure that if something goes wrong, their position can be identified quickly.   There is also a shared understanding that comes with its use.   A flare is rarely cast without reason. It carries implication. It suggests urgency, need, or intent. Those who see it are left to interpret that implication, but the fact that it was cast at all is often enough to prompt a response.   Its limitations are what keep it grounded.   It does not carry detailed information. It cannot distinguish between different types of need without prior agreement. A flare is a signal, not a message. It says only that something has happened, and that it is important enough to be noticed.   Despite that, or perhaps because of it, the spell remains widely used.   There is a certain reliability in something so direct. It does not rely on shared language, complex systems, or precise timing. It works as long as there is space above and someone within range to see it.   Signal Flare does not ask to be understood.   It ensures that it is seen, and leaves everything else to those who respond.

“I was down to shouting at the wind and hoping it answered back. That little burst of light was the only smart thing I did all day. They told me later they saw it from nearly a mile out. I believe them. It’s the only reason I’m still here.”
