Ruthenium
Ruthenium is a rare, hard metallic element typically found in small quantities within ores that also contain platinum and other noble metals. When refined it appears as a bright silvery gray metal known for its remarkable hardness and resistance to corrosion. Ruthenium does not easily tarnish or degrade, even when exposed to harsh chemicals or intense heat, which has made it valuable to both master smiths and artificers who require materials capable of enduring extreme conditions. Because it occurs only in trace amounts within larger deposits, obtaining usable quantities of ruthenium requires careful refinement and considerable effort.
In arcane traditions ruthenium is often valued for its stability and durability when exposed to powerful magical forces. Artificers sometimes incorporate small amounts of the metal into enchanted alloys used for delicate mechanisms, arcane instruments, or magical circuitry that must resist gradual magical wear. Some scholars also believe ruthenium helps maintain the structural integrity of enchanted objects over long periods, making it useful in relics and magical devices intended to endure for generations. Though rarely seen outside advanced workshops and scholarly laboratories, ruthenium has earned a reputation as a reliable and resilient metal suited to the most demanding forms of magical craftsmanship.
