Mister Whispers

It Wasn't The Wind

"Hush, hush, don’t make a sound,
Lock the doors, don’t turn around.
The candle’s low, the air is thin,
Close your eyes, don’t let him in.
Step too soft, he’ll hear you creep,
Breathe too loud, he’ll steal your sleep.
Say his name, he’ll know your face,
Call him once, he’ll take your place."
— Arin Lullaby

There are things that lurk in the forests. Things that stalk the roads at night. Things that watch from the deep places where no lantern light reaches. The people of Areeott know these stories well. They know the rules of the wild. They know the proper way to address spirits. They know the offerings to leave behind. But Mr. Whispers is different. He does not wait in the trees. He does not pace the empty roads. He comes inside.

It is said that when the world falls quiet. When the last candle flickers low. When the fire dies to embers and even the wind holds its breath. That is when he comes. He does not break windows or scratch at doors. He does not crawl through cracks or creep across the floors. He does not need to. He is simply there. In the corner where no one looked a moment before. In the doorway where the light does not reach. In the hallway just out of sight.

And then he whispers your name.

No one knows what he wants. Some say he takes children though there are few who can name a child who vanished at his call. Others claim he steals voices. Those who answer him speak less and less until they are silent altogether. There are those who insist he does not harm at all. That he only listens. That he only lingers. That he only waits. All agree on one thing. Once you hear him you must never answer.

The stories are old. No one remembers the first telling. No two versions are exactly the same. In some villages he is a man who walked into the mountains and returned wrong. His voice softened by the stone. His name lost to the echoes. In others he is something that was never human. Something that learned how to shape itself into the suggestion of a man. Something that does not breathe. Does not blink. Does not move unless he is certain no one is watching. The priests of the Church of the Beacon do not speak of him but the old women by the hearth still mark their doorframes with iron.

There is a silence that comes with his presence. A weight in the air like the hush before a storm. The crackle of the fire dampens. The wind outside dulls. Even the restless creaks of the house settle as if waiting. In that stillness the whisper comes.

Soft. Low. Almost familiar.

Your name.

The children of Areeott are taught young. They know what to do. Do not answer. Do not look. Do not move. Keep your breath steady. Keep your eyes on the fire. The lantern. The dim glow of safety. If you pretend not to hear he may leave. If you pretend not to notice he may lose interest.

But there are those who cannot help themselves.

It is not a trick. Not a game. Not a test. If you answer. If you acknowledge him. He knows you now. Names are his to take. Not the way a thief steals a coin. The way a song buries itself in the mind. Looping endlessly. Whispering over and over in the quiet spaces.

He can follow you anywhere now.

Some who hear him are never quite the same. They hesitate before answering when spoken to as if waiting for something else to speak first. They wake in strange places with no memory of how they got there. They startle at their own reflections. At the sound of their own names on another’s lips. Sometimes they stop speaking altogether.

Sometimes in the darkest stories someone will see a figure standing in the corner of their room where no one should be. Not moving. Not breathing. Only watching.

The best way to keep Mr. Whispers at bay is to never let him in. A home that is too quiet. Too still. Too open to listening invites him closer. That is why people in Areeott leave a single candle burning through the night. Why they place iron nails above their doorframes. Why some families hang a tiny bell near their bedside. Noise keeps him uncertain. Light keeps him hesitant. Iron keeps him from stepping too close.

But most of all they never answer.

Because if he calls your name. If he whispers it from the dark and you speak back. He is no longer on the outside looking in.

Then he's already inside.

It is not the cold that makes the fire flicker. It is not the house settling when the floor creaks behind you. It is not the wind when you hear your name in the dark. And if you answer. If you let him know that you heard. Then it is already too late.
— Common saying among night watchmen in Areeott

"Not for me, not tonight,
Find no voice, fade from sight.
If I don’t hear, you can’t stay,
Turn your back and walk away."

Unseen Until Noticed. Mister Whispers can’t be perceived directly while a creature is observing him. If a creature attempts to look at him, it instead perceives only an absence, distortion, or movement at the edge of its vision. Mister Whispers becomes fully visible only to a creature that has become aware of him. A creature aware of Mister Whispers can target him normally, though he appears indistinct and partially unreal.   Uncertain Position. While no creature is directly observing Mister Whispers, he has advantage on Dexterity saving throws and Dexterity (Stealth) checks.   The Quiet That Comes. Nonmagical sounds within 60 feet of Mister Whispers are muted. Creatures in that area have disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing. A creature that is alone in this area has disadvantage on saving throws against Mister Whispers’ abilities.   It Knows Your Name. Mister Whispers knows the name of any creature that can hear him. When he speaks a creature’s name, that creature must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or become Marked by Whispers.   A creature that hears its name clearly spoken by Mister Whispers becomes aware of him. Once a creature is aware of Mister Whispers, it remains aware until the encounter ends.   The Rule of Answering. If a creature that is aware of Mister Whispers intentionally communicates meaning to another creature,, whether by speech, whisper, telepathy, magical message, or meaningful gesture, it is considered to have answered him. The creature immediately becomes Marked by Whispers and gains 1 level of Deepening Silence.

Mark of Whispers

A creature marked by Mister Whispers is subtly bound to him.
  • The creature has disadvantage on Wisdom saving throws against Mister Whispers.
  • The creature can’t benefit from advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened.
  • The creature can hear Mister Whispers’ voice at any distance on the same plane.

  • At the start of each of its turns, Mister Whispers chooses one Marked creature. That creature must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or gain 1 level of Deepening Silence (maximum 4).   A creature can attempt to resist the Mark. At the end of each of its turns, if it has not communicated and has not taken a reaction since the start of its turn, it can make a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw. On a success, the Mark ends and all Deepening Silence levels are removed. If the creature has communicated or taken a reaction, it makes this saving throw with disadvantage.

    Deepening Silence

The effects of Deepening Silence are cumulative:   1 Silence. The creature has disadvantage on Charisma checks.
2 Silence. The creature can’t take reactions.
3 Silence. The creature speaks only in whispers and has disadvantage on attack rolls.
4 Silence. The creature is incapacitated until the end of its next turn.
If a creature with 4 Silence fails a saving throw to gain another level of Deepening Silence, it begins to fade. At the end of its next turn, if it still has 4 Silence, it is Taken.   A creature that is Taken vanishes silently, leaving no trace. It is not dead, but removed from the world by Mister Whispers’ influence.

    Actions

Whisper Your Name. Mister Whispers targets up to two creatures he can sense within 60 feet of him that can hear him. Each target must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or become Marked by Whispers.   Closer Than You Think. Mister Whispers moves up to his speed without provoking opportunity attacks. He can move through creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain, taking 10 (3d6) force damage if he ends his turn inside an object. If he ends this movement while no creature is directly observing him, he can immediately use Whisper Your Name.   Don’t Turn Around. One creature Marked by Whispers must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened until the end of its next turn. If the creature moves while frightened in this way, it gains 1 level of Deepening Silence.

    Legendary Actions

Mister Whispers can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. He regains spent legendary actions at the start of his turn.   Step Where You Aren’t Looking. Mister Whispers moves up to half his speed. This movement can’t be perceived directly and doesn’t provoke opportunity attacks.   Say It Again. One creature that can hear him must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or hear its name and gain 1 level of Deepening Silence.   Take the Voice (Costs 2 Actions). One creature Marked by Whispers must succeed on a DC 17 Charisma saving throw or be unable to speak until the end of its next turn. It gains 1 level of Deepening Silence.

    Lair Actions

When Mister Whispers is within a home, ruin, or enclosed structure, he takes one of the following lair actions on initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties):   One creature that can hear him hears its name clearly whispered from directly behind it and must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or become Marked by Whispers.   Open flames within 60 feet of Mister Whispers dim, shedding half their normal light until the next round.   Doors and openings subtly shift; until the next round, creatures can’t benefit from advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks.

A voice from the dark, soft and familiar, speaks your name from somewhere just behind you.

Every single one of these tales is a complete setting for a horror movie. I love them <3 This guy in particular creeps me out! It reminds me of a Malkavian (known as the name eater) in vampire the masquerade.. I had some amazing sessions with him!

Summer Camp is here and so is My pledge! <3

Visit my world of Kena'an for tales of fantasy and magic! Or, if you fancy something darker, Crux Umbra awaits.
