Europium
Europium is a soft, silvery metallic element found within rare earth mineral deposits that contain several unusual metals mixed together. It tarnishes quickly when exposed to air and reacts more readily than many other rare metals, which requires careful storage and handling. Europium is typically extracted from complex ores formed in ancient geological environments where rare elements slowly concentrated over long periods of time. Though it is not widely used in ordinary metalworking, europium possesses distinctive luminous properties that make it valuable in specialized materials.
In arcane traditions europium is especially prized for the brilliant colors its compounds can produce when energized by magical or electrical forces. Certain europium infused crystals and powders can emit vivid red or blue light, making them useful in enchanted lamps, glowing runes, magical indicators, and arcane display devices. Artificers sometimes incorporate europium into magical lighting systems or signal beacons where strong, reliable color is important. Because of its rarity and its ability to produce clear luminous effects, europium has become an important element among scholars and craftsmen who specialize in magical illumination and visual arcane instruments.
