Episodic Elixir
Sometimes You Need An Audience
“The laughter doesn't bother me. What unsettles me is how appropriate it always is.”
Episodic Elixir is a curious and widely discussed magical potion known for producing the uncanny sensation that one’s life is being observed by an invisible audience. Those who drink it find their successes and failures punctuated by bursts of applause, laughter, groans, or uncomfortable silence that seem to emerge from nowhere.
The potion typically appears as a flat purple liquid sealed in a small metal bottle with a pull tab rather than a cork. When opened, faint murmuring can sometimes be heard for a moment, as though a distant crowd were settling into their seats. After it is consumed, the drinker is followed for roughly half an hour by the unseen reactions of this phantom audience.
The effect most often manifests during moments of dramatic tension. When the drinker experiences a particularly triumphant success, the air may fill with enthusiastic clapping and cheering. When they fail spectacularly, mocking laughter or disappointed groans might echo around them. On rare occasions, an especially awkward misstep is met with a heavy and uncomfortable silence that can be far more unsettling than any jeer.
Scholars disagree about the origin of Episodic Elixir. Some believe it was created by illusionists experimenting with emotional resonance magic. Others suspect it is the byproduct of a minor planar bleed from a realm where stories themselves possess a strange awareness. A few entertainers claim the potion was originally brewed by theatrical mages who wanted to guarantee an appreciative crowd.
Whatever its origin, the elixir has become a favorite curiosity among traveling performers, pranksters, and adventurous alchemists. Most drink it for the absurdity of hearing an audience respond to their lives, though some claim the experience has a strange way of turning ordinary moments into unforgettable scenes.

Back in the day when I DM'd AD&D 2E games, these potions would have been a riot.
