Discern Kinship

Blood Never Lies

“I watched a woman lose her title, her inheritance, and her name in the space of a minute. Not because of politics. Because of truth.”
— Seris Valenne, Alaecian court archivist

Discern Kinship is a spell of quiet certainty in a world where certainty is rare. It does not conjure visions, summon voices, or interpret symbolic signs. Its function is direct and narrowly defined. It determines whether two creatures share a biological lineage and, if so, how that lineage connects them at the nearest point of relation.

The spell does not consider how the question is framed or why it is asked. It does not weigh intention, emotion, or consequence. It examines what is present within the bodies of the subjects and resolves that information into a clear structural relationship. If a connection exists, the spell identifies the closest shared point in that lineage and the degree of separation between the two individuals. If no connection exists, it confirms that absence without qualification.

The result is immediate and unambiguous. It is not presented as a vision or a narrative. The caster does not see a lineage unfold or experience a sequence of ancestral connections. The information is understood directly, as a resolved fact. This clarity is what defines the spell’s reputation. It does not provide interpretation. It provides an answer. Because of this, Discern Kinship has become associated with finality rather than discovery.

In formal institutions, particularly within courts and noble houses, the use of the spell is often restricted or prohibited. Questions of inheritance, legitimacy, and succession depend not only on biological relationships, but on recognition, documentation, and established claims. The introduction of a method that can confirm or deny lineage without regard for those structures presents a risk to stability.

There are documented cases in which the spell has been used to challenge established lines of succession. In some instances, individuals presumed to be heirs were shown to have no biological connection to the line they claimed. In others, previously unrecognized individuals were confirmed to share direct lineage with ruling families. The consequences of such revelations have included disputes, loss of status, and, in some cases, the collapse of existing hierarchies.

As a result, many houses have taken steps to limit exposure to the spell. Records may be altered or destroyed. Access to biological material may be controlled or restricted. In some cases, the use of the spell is treated as an act of aggression, not because it causes harm directly, but because of the disruption it can introduce. Outside of these structures, the spell serves more practical functions.

Investigators use it to confirm identity when names, documents, or appearances cannot be trusted. In environments where deception is common, the ability to establish whether two individuals are related provides a point of reference that is difficult to falsify. This can be used to verify claims, identify impostors, or establish connections that would otherwise remain hidden.

Healers and scholars employ the spell when examining remains, particularly in cases where physical recognition is not possible. Damage, decay, or deliberate interference may obscure identifying features, making it difficult to determine whether remains belong to a specific individual. By comparing those remains to known relatives, the spell can provide confirmation where other methods fail.

In the aftermath of conflict or disaster, the spell has been used to reconnect families with lost members. When visual identification is unreliable or impossible, Discern Kinship offers a means of establishing certainty. This use is often regarded as one of the few contexts in which the spell’s results are received without resistance.

Among scholars, the spell has gained importance in the study of lineage and inheritance. Following the Shattering, many records were lost, altered, or rendered unreliable. Traditional methods of tracing ancestry became difficult to maintain. Discern Kinship persisted in a form that remained stable and resistant to the distortions that affected other forms of magic.

This reliability has made it a valuable tool for reconstructing fragmented histories. By comparing individuals across known and suspected lines, scholars can identify connections that would not be apparent through documentation alone. The spell does not provide a complete genealogy, but it allows for the verification of specific relationships within that larger structure. Despite its usefulness, the spell is defined by clear limitations.

It does not construct family trees or trace lineage beyond the two subjects being compared. It identifies the nearest shared connection and the degree of separation, but it does not reveal the identities of intermediate individuals. It does not provide names, locations, or historical context. It answers a question of relationship, not a question of history.

The spell also does not account for the circumstances that led to the relationship it reveals. It does not distinguish between acknowledged and unacknowledged lineage. It does not indicate whether a connection was known, concealed, or deliberately obscured. The information it provides exists independently of social or cultural interpretation. This lack of context is a significant factor in how the spell is perceived.

Those who rely on it heavily may find themselves in possession of information that carries implications beyond what the spell itself addresses. A confirmed relationship may challenge established identities or expectations. An absence of connection may contradict long held beliefs. The spell does not assist in resolving these outcomes. It presents the structure and leaves interpretation to those who receive it. There are also concerns regarding how the spell is used outside formal and ethical boundaries.

Because the spell requires biological material from the subjects being compared, it has given rise to practices that involve the collection and storage of such material without consent. Black markets have emerged where samples are traded, often tied to individuals of status or interest. Private investigators maintain collections for use in ongoing cases. Certain institutions have developed secured repositories containing biological records, recognizing the value of such information in matters of leverage and control.

These practices reflect the broader impact of the spell beyond its immediate function. The ability to confirm lineage has implications that extend into areas of power, identity, and personal autonomy.

Among the general population, Discern Kinship is regarded with a mixture of curiosity and unease. Its effects are subtle and without spectacle. There is no visible transformation or dramatic display. The spell resolves quietly, often without outward indication that anything has occurred beyond the caster’s understanding.

This absence of visible effect contributes to its reputation. The result is not something that can be observed or questioned through ordinary means. It is known to the caster with certainty, and that certainty can carry weight regardless of how it is received by others.

The spell does not create relationships or alter them. It identifies what exists at a biological level and presents that information without modification.

In doing so, it removes the space in which uncertainty can exist.

“You think lineage is history. It isn’t. It’s a structure. And once you see it clearly, you realize how many lives are built on pretending not to.”
— Ilaro Venn, Ministry of Inheritance, Royal Court of Avindor

Discern Kinship

2-level Divination

Ritual - does not require spell slot, takes 10 minutes longer
Casting Time: 1 minute
Range/Area: Self
Components: Verbal, Somatic, Material
Materials: a drop of blood or a small piece of biological material from each target, which is not consumed
Duration: Instantaneous
You attune your senses to the patterns of lineage and inheritance that bind living creatures.   When you cast this spell, you examine two creatures or remains, each represented by the material component. The spell determines whether the targets share a biological relationship.   If they are related, you learn their closest biological relationship, such as parent and child, siblings, or more distant ancestry, as well as whether the relationship is direct or indirect and the number of generations separating them.   If no biological relationship exists, you learn that they are unrelated.   This spell reveals true physical lineage and ignores social, legal, or assumed relationships. Illusions, disguises, and shapechanging effects don’t affect the result, though effects that fundamentally alter a creature’s biological nature may do so.   The spell doesn’t reveal the identity of unknown relatives, only the relationship between the chosen targets. It fails if sufficient biological material isn’t present. Creatures without a biological lineage are unaffected.
