Sand Carriage
Sand Carriages are among the most essential vehicles in Mesan, built specifically to travel across the deep, shifting sands of the Nocarri. Unlike ordinary wagons, which would quickly sink or become trapped, Sand Carriages use broad paddle-wheels that bite into the sand and push the vehicle forward in a steady, churning rhythm.
Most are drawn by strong desert-trained beasts and supported by heat-charged crystals that assist the axle when the terrain becomes difficult. Their design allows merchants, pilgrims, travelers, soldiers, and royal parties to cross Mesan’s harshest routes with supplies, shelter, and greater protection from the desert’s dangers. In Mesani culture, a Sand Carriage is not merely a means of travel, but a respected work of survival craft: part wagon, part caravan, and part desert vessel.
Design
Sand Carriages in Mesan are most commonly built in two main forms, both designed to traverse the shifting sands of the Nocarri using broad paddle-wheels and powerful draft animals.
The first is a closed Sand Carriage, which resembles a desert caravan wagon. This version is enclosed with a sturdy body, shaded roof, and protective side panels or curtains, offering passengers greater shelter from heat, sun glare, blowing grit, and sandstorms. It is often used for longer journeys, family travel, merchant crossings, and the transport of important passengers or delicate goods.
The second is an open Sand Carriage, which more closely resembles a rugged wagon. This version has a more exposed frame, making it easier to load cargo, supplies, tools, and water, and is especially useful for labor, trade routes, short-distance travel, and practical day-to-day transport.
Both versions are fitted with Mesan’s distinctive paddle-wheels, whose broad, bladed rims bite into the loose sand and help push the carriage forward where ordinary wheels would fail. Their frames are built low and sturdy for balance on uneven dunes, with reinforced axles and broad undercarriages meant to endure the strain of desert travel. Most are pulled by camels or heavy sand oxen, depending on the route and load.
Camels are valued for endurance, agility, and long-distance crossings, while sand oxen are favored for strength, steadiness, and hauling heavier wagons through difficult terrain. Though their appearances may differ, both forms of Sand Carriage are unmistakably Mesani: practical, durable, and shaped by the demands of a land where the sand behaves almost like a sea.
Development of the Sand Carriage
The Sand Carriage developed out of Mesan’s long struggle to cross the Nocarri with more than a rider could carry. Early Mesani travelers relied on pack animals, sled-like drags, and simple wheeled carts, but ordinary wheels proved nearly useless in the deepest sands. They sank, spun, cracked under strain, or became trapped on dunes where no true road could hold its shape. For merchants, pilgrims, healers, and royal messengers, this made long crossings dangerous and slow, especially when water, food, tents, trade goods, and emergency supplies had to be transported across great distances.
The first major breakthrough came when the Mesani began treating the desert less like a road and more like a sea. Instead of building wheels meant only to roll, they designed wheels that could push. Inspired by the movement of paddles through water, these early sand-wheels were fitted with broad wooden slats that bit into the sand and shoved it backward as the vehicle moved forward.
The first models were heavy, awkward, and prone to breaking, but they proved one essential truth: a carriage could cross loose sand if its wheels were made to churn rather than simply roll.
Over generations, the design improved. The paddle-blades became wider, stronger, and slightly curved to scoop through sand more efficiently. Axles were reinforced, carriage bodies were built lower for balance, and protective housings were added to keep grit from destroying the wheel mechanisms. Mesani builders also learned that different routes required different builds. Open Sand Carriages became common for labor, cargo, and shorter routes, while closed carriage bodies developed for long-distance travel, delicate goods, family crossings, and protection from sun and sandstorms.
