Dried Smokeweed

Sol took a bite of his salad and blinked, taking in a sort of roasted taste, but he couldn't see any sort of grilled meat inside. Then he spotted it: small brown slivers within the greens. "Smokeweed? There's smokeweed in Asrail?" He asked. Tarana smiled with a nod. "Yes, Sun. We Asrailians use it in a lot of our meals."
— -Book 6: Veil of Asrail

Dried Smokeweed is a preserved culinary herb made from the leaves of the smokeweed plant. Widely used throughout Tydaria and Asrail, it has become a staple ingredient in many regional dishes and is a sought-after import in other parts of Tydas.

When exposed to heat and moisture, Dried Smokeweed softens considerably while retaining its characteristic sliver-like shape. Though no longer brittle, the herb remains visible within a dish and is often recognizable as thin brown strips among the other ingredients.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Dried Smokeweed contains aromatic oils and trace elemental residues naturally accumulated during growth. When heated during cooking, these compounds are released into the food, producing a rich smoky flavor similar to that of a meal cooked over an open fire. The herb does not produce smoke on its own and is used exclusively as a flavoring ingredient.

The Taste of Smokeweed

When consumed, Dried Smokeweed releases a distinctive smoky flavor that resembles food cooked over wood or charcoal. Its taste combines herbal notes with a savory richness that varies depending on the ingredients it accompanies. In meats, it is often compared to smoked bacon or roasted game, while in vegetables, it produces flavors similar to those found in fire-roasted dishes.

Manufacturing process

The smokeweed is cleaned, dried, and sliced into thin slivers before use.

History

Tydaria

Early Tydians discovered Smokeweed growing throughout the meadows and grasslands of the Plains of Taji. Its abundance and ease of harvest made it a common foraged herb among farming communities, and over generations it transitioned from a wild plant to one commonly cultivated in household gardens and agricultural plots.

Asrail

Early Asrailians gathered Smokeweed from the wild long before it was intentionally cultivated in household gardens. It grew naturally along portions of the Berknora River and the nearby grasslands surrounding Asrail, becoming a familiar part of daily life for generations.

Significance

Though inexpensive and readily available within its native regions, Dried Smokeweed is regarded as an important part of the culinary traditions of both Tydaria and Asrail. Its familiar flavor has become deeply connected to memories of home, family, and community, making it a common feature of recipes passed down through generations.

For travelers living far from their homeland, dishes seasoned with Dried Smokeweed are often considered a comforting reminder of home.
