Nala

Sixteen years old Nala is the only daughter of the High Priest of Ardeal and his fourth child in total. Because her mother died shortly after her birth, her father fears for her safety and keeps her locked up in the giant cathedral he presides over. Naturally, Nala's one and only wish (besides making her father proud and becoming the best nun ever) is to look outside and walk the streets of the city. Just once.

She's the oldest nun-in-training, her father keeps postponing the date of her finally joining the order full time and Nala starts to doubt that she will take her vows anytime soon. Or even at all. She fears it is due to the unfortunate death of her mother, because murder is a grave sin in Ardeal and sinners cannot be ordained. Despite being a baby and having no control over such situation, deep down, she feels responsible.

Taboos

That one fateful evening when she finally decides to sneak out of her fancy cathedral cage to go and see a rare map on a display in a museum, she gets shot and magic powers start awakening in her blood. Magic is considered to be a crime against humanity, is punished without mercy by imprisonment, death or even being kicked out of the city and tossed somewhere in the deep and dark and unforgiving jungle surrounding it. Which is worse than Hell.
