Esidell

"Floating city. Huh. What will they come up with next?"
  • Unrecorded Everian soldier during the occupation of Esidell
  • Esidell is the capital city of the Eastern Elven Territories, located to the west of the Great Eastern Desert and most notable for its lingering Darhemian magic. It serves as the centre of government for the Eastern Elves, insomuch as they can be said to have one.   History   Few Darhemian records survive, though tales passed down through generations of desert elves seem to place the city's founding at least 1500 years ago. The city was under Darhemian control for approximately a millennium until it was freed in the early years of the Darhemian War, though it was not used as a military outpost due to the failure of arcanists to shut down all of its magical defences.   Being one of the cities least damaged by the war, Esidell was selected as the capital of the new elven nation by a group of representatives from both the native desert elves and the migratory wood elves. It was also partially chosen due to the majesty granted by the remnants of the Darhemian magic: a large portion of the city floated, and its weather was temperate despite being in the desert.   The original population of the city quickly multiplied as refugees fled from the ruined cities and unsustainable villages of the old Darhemian State, necessitating the building of more conventional buildings on the ground. A slums district known as 'The Shadows' began to form underneath the floating government area.   As allies of the Baronies of Everflame during the Second Arcane War, the Eastern Elves were never invaded, though a precautionary system to shut down the teleportation circles - the only easy way to get to the government district - was set up in Esidell. Thanks to early warnings from other countries, wizards in Esidell managed to prevent most of the natural disasters brought on by the Armageddon Ritual from damaging the city too heavily. Because of this, the city now rivals the Great University as the magical hub city of the world, though its teaching facilities are far less impressive.   Magical Effects   Due to lingering Darhemian magical engineering, a large portion of the city, mostly comprised of government buildings, floats above the ground. In addition, all of the land within a 1 mile radius of the government district experiences temperate weather, despite its location in the desert. The city has even seen snow on more than one occasion.   Efforts were initially made to find and shut down the sources of these effects, but it was eventually determined that they were not harmful and unlikely to cease functioning, and so left alone. Due to the mysterious nature of these effects, all attempts to replicate them elsewhere have failed. It is believed that the Darhemian government had designed an artefact capable of repeatedly casting a spell on a specific target, but no such artefact has ever been found or replicated.   Economy   Unlike other cities in the Eastern Elven Territories, Esidell does not need to import food due to its temperate climate. It primarily imports water and luxury goods from the Baronies of Everflame. Its main and almost only export is magical goods, for which there is great demand in the Empire of Hin-Sung and Lightarm.
