Elven Grain Rot
Elven Grain Rot is a magical fungal plant disease commonly found from Greenspring to Shinesong in the eastern territories of the Southern Elves as well as Verdegar and Litheria. Virtually immune to conventional antifungal treatments, it has caused a number of food shortages in both Verdegar and Litheria, though never in the larger and more agricultural Southern Elven Territories.
History
First recorded in 1785 ANG by Litherian farmers, the Rot caused a minor famine that year. Tracking its progress northward, Litherian agents found its origin point near an old elven wizard's tower, giving it its current name. dispel magic was found to be somewhat effective in dealing with it, rendering it vulnerable to conventional treatments, but due to the lack of arcane magic practitioners in Litheria such a solution proved inefficient and expensive. An inquiry by the local elven tribe in the following year found that the Rot was the result of a mad wizard's attempt to create a large-scale version of the animate plants spell.
The subsequent years had similar results, even pushing Litheria to temporarily legalise and invite practitioners of arcane magic to stop its spread. The first recorded incident of Elven Grain Rot in Verdegar took place in 1788 ANG, forcing the Everian government to conscript students from the Great University in order to stop it. Tensions between Litheria and the Southern Elves rose as the former blamed the latter for not dealing with the fungus when it first started. These tensions may have escalated into all-out war had Everian wizards not discovered that antimagic fields could slow the fungus's spread, and certain healing spells could kill it altogether.
Ever since, both Litheria and Everflame have developed consistent methods of dealing with the Rot: Everflame by calling volunteers from the Great University to ward the border with antimagic fields and stockpiling antifungal substances, and Litheria, stubbornly refusing to use arcane magic, conscripting a large portion of the Temple of Jothir's nature clerics to kill the fungus as it appears on Litherian soil.
Treatment
Nothing short of destroying the affected crop will stop Elven Grain Rot without the use of magic. Spells such as dispel magic can remove the fungus's magical properties, rendering it vulnerable to conventional treatments, while cure wounds and other healing spells are effective at killing it directly. The fungus has difficulty expanding into areas under the effect of an antimagic field, though it can survive there.
