Dream Shifter

Cultists drag an unarmed human warrior before an altar, one more sacrifice for the beast god. In the blink of an eye the human’s hands transform into bear claws and his skin into feathers and flames. Panicked the cultists flee deeper into the temple as the surreal creature rises and gives chase.   The elf closes her eyes and dives into a wellspring of long- forgotten dreams, one containing the knowledge she needs right now. As she opens her eyes, the giant ice lizard hun- ting her has almost caught up. Calmly she lifts her hand and with a roar the flames spring forth.   Between the smoldering remains of a farm stands a dwarf, seemingly made up of crystal. He holds a small, wooden toy, the last puzzle piece to the mystery of an old queen’s greed. As the dwarf leaves this memory, the farm fades away.   Dream shifters have merged with a surreal being born from a dream. To be a dream shifter means to embrace aspects of oneself one can neither understand nor control, to transform and bring them to the surface. These fantastic powers allow dream shifters to overcome inner and outer limitations and to push even deeper into the unknown.

Fantastic Fusion

Each dream shifter has entered a symbiosis with an eidolon, an unstable creature from the dream realm. This link allows them to manifest their features in the material world. Depending on their eidolon a dream shifter can be a horrifying monster or a soothing presence. Even though their forms are shifting and unstable, dream shifters have learned to use them as a means of survival and channel them into their own kind of magic.

About the journey

Dreamers who visit the dream realm will find a place of constant change. There, shapeshifters called eidolons feed on their excess psychic energies. They take the form of the dreamer's fears, memories, and wishes confronting them with hidden aspects of themselves.   In rare cases an eidolon connects permanently to the dreamer's mind, creating a symbiotic bond between the two. The dreamer starts taking the shape of their own fears, memories, or wishes in the material world, becoming a dream shifter.   These surreal transformations often lead dream shifters away from civilization. They embrace the chaos their eidolon has brought to the surface and wander free.   In a world where the lines are already drawn, and the sides are chosen dream shifters stand in as champions of the contradictory and irrational. As with themselves, things are seldom as they seem. There is always a second layer worth another look, something unexpected that is waiting to happen.

Creating a Dream Shifter

The most central aspect of a dream shifter is the eidolon they are linked to. Do you remember the dream that connected you to your eidolon? What does your eidolon represent? How does the eidolon communicate with you? Only through dreams? Through riddles? Or do you hear its voice? Do you see it as a source of power you have to master? Or are you grateful for your mysterious ally? Also, think about how you learned to use your Dream Shape effectively. Did you learn from a community of dream shifters in some remote place, or did you teach these abilities to yourself along the way? Searching for the paradoxical and contradictory can be difficult in a world where most people often act on common sense. How do you get into more interesting situations? When do people show, who they really are?

Quick Build

You can make a dream shifter quickly by following these suggestions. First, Wisdom should be your highest ability score, followed by Strength and Constitution. Second, choose the hermit background. Third, assign your first Permanence Point to the Elemental Assault Manifestation. Fourth, choose Nightmare eidolon as your Eidolon Type.

Optional Rule: Multiclassing

Flexibility Points

Your eidolon infuses your Dream Shape with unstable magic, giving you a random combination of features every day and fueling your Dream Shape.   You gain Flexibility points by rolling on the Manifestation table. When doing so, you roll a d8 and gain a Flexibility Point assigned to the Resulting Manifestation. Results 6 and 7 are determined by your Subclass. When rolling an 8, roll on the Anomaly table instead. Manifestations provide benefits at 1, 3, and 6 Points, Anomalies at 1 Point. Spen- ding Flexibility Points might reduce the benefits of the Manifestations or Anomalies, they were assigned to.   When you receive this feature and at the end of every Long Rest thereafter, you can remove all of your Flexibility Points and roll a number of times on the Manifestations table equal to half your dream shifter level (rounded down) plus your Wisdom modifier. (minimum of one)   As a bonus action, you can spend a Flexibility Point to activate your Dream Shape. while your Dream Shape is active, you gain the benefits of your Manifestations and Anomalies. Your Dream Shape lasts for 10 minutes. It ends early if you die. You can also end your Dream Shape on your turn as a bonus action.

Permanence Points

You have some amount of control over the evolution of your Dream Shape.   At 1st level and every two levels thereafter add a Permanence Point to any Manifestation on the Mani- festations table. (You can't choose Emerging Anomaly.) Permanence Points stack with Flexibility Points for the sake of additional benefits.   At 11th and 18th level add a Permanence Point to an Anomaly on the Anomaly table. (You can't choose Fractals.)

Eidolon Type

At 1st level, choose what kind of eidolon you are linked to: Nightmare Eidolon, Harmony Eidolon, or Wonder Eidolon, all detailed at the end of the class description. The Eidolon Type you choose grants you features at 1st level and again at 3rd, 6th, 10th, and 14th level.

Lucid Rest

Beginning at 2nd level, your eidolon improves your rate of recovery. When you finish a Long Rest, you regain all hit dice associated with your dream shifter level. (You still only gain half of the hit dice associated with levels you have taken in other classes) Additionally finishing a Long Rest reduces your exhaustion level by 2 instead of 1.

Reverie

Starting at 2nd level your eidolon's influence gives you access to your own subconscious. Whenever you activate your Dream Shape, you can use Transformation, Respite, or Epiphany. You can also use a bonus action and spend a Flexibility Point to use this feature.

Transformation

Reassign one assigned Flexibility Point to a Manifestation of your choice or re-choose all choices of a Manifestation such as resistances or damage types. (You can't choose Emerging Anomaly) You may reassign an additional Flexibility Point at 5th, 11th, and 17th level.

Respite

You can spend one Hit Die. If you do, roll it and add your Constitution modifier to the result. You regain hit points equal to the total. You may spend an additional Hit Die at 5th, 11th, and 17th level.

Epiphany

You learn a cantrip from the dream shifter cantrip list. You forget it at the end of your next Long Rest. Wisdom is your Spellcasting ability for dream shifter spells. You use your Wisdom whenever a spell refers to your Spellcasting ability. In addition, use your Wisdom modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a dream shifter spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one.   Spell save DC = 8 + your Proficiency Bonus + your Wisdom modifier.   Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier.   Spellcasting Focus You can use a druidic focus as a Spellcasting focus for your dream shifter Spells. While your Dream Shape is active, it serves as a druidic focus.
Dream Shifter Cantrip List
control flames minor illusion
druidcraft ray of frost
fire bolt shape water
gust shocking grasp
mold earth thorn whip

Ability Score Increase

When you reach 4th level, and again at 8th, 12th, 16th, and 19th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or you can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. As normal, you can’t increase an ability score above 20 using this feature.   Using the optional feats rule, you can forgo taking this feature to take a feat of your choice instead.

Extra Attack

Beginning at 5th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn.

Backdoor

At 7th level, once per Long Rest, you can spend 10 minutes to dive into a creature’s memories. Choose a creature within 10 feet of you that is either sleeping or unconscious. The creature must make a Wisdom saving throw against your spell save DC. On a failed save you can ask the target a number of questions equal to your Wisdom modifier (at least one) and the target has to answer truthfully. For the duration of this feature, the target creature cannot wake up through natural means. On a successful save this feature does nothing. When the targeted creature wakes up it is aware of your attempt to gain information from it and whether you succeeded.

Intertwined Mind

At 15th level the bond to your eidolon allows you to draw wisdom from its otherworldly memories. Your Wisdom score increases by 2 and your maximum for Wisdom is now 22.   Additionally you are resistant to psychic damage.

Dream Realized

At 20th level your fusion with your eidolon is complete. This might cause slight changes in your personality. You gain the following features:
  • Whenever you roll on the Manifestation table, you may choose the result instead of rolling a d8.
  • Your Dream Shape only ends when you choose to end it.
  • Whenever you finish a Long Rest, you can reassign a Permanence Point to another Manifestation on the same table. (You can’t choose Emerging Anomaly or Fractals)

Starting Equipment

You start with the following equipment, in addition to the equipment granted by your background:

  • (a) scale mail or (b) leather armor
  • (a) a component pouch or (b) a Druidic Focus
  • Two simple weapons, four javelins and an explorer’s pack
