Mechanics & Inner Workings

Standard Thunder Powder

  The most common formulation is known simply as Forge Thunder Powder. Balanced for reliability and longevity, it produces a strong, steady detonation without excessive fouling. This powder is used for standard Forge-Ball ammunition and training loads. Forge Thunder Powder is identifiable by its dark gray coloration and faint metallic scent. Each batch is tested by firing a calibrated charge against rune-marked stone blocks; deviations in penetration or recoil result in immediate disposal. No effort is made to salvage flawed powder waste is preferable to risk.  

Deep-Pressure Powder

  Developed for Armor-Breaker and Magma-Tip rounds, Deep-Pressure Powder burns hotter and faster, generating extreme force over a shorter interval. It incorporates trace volcanic salts and ashglass dust, which increase energy release but also accelerate barrel wear. Because of its volatility, Deep-Pressure Powder is issued only in sealed charges and never loose. Gunners are trained to recognize its sharp, sulfur-heavy smell and warned never to substitute it for standard loads. Improper use has been known to rupture barrels or shear firing mechanisms clean off.  

Rune-Stable Powder

  Rune-Shot ammunition requires Rune-Stable Powder, a formulation designed to interact safely with etched sigils. This powder burns slightly cooler and includes powdered crystal and stabilizing mineral binders that prevent magical feedback. Without it, rune-etched rounds can misfire, discharge prematurely, or explode within the barrel. Rune-Stable Powder is notoriously difficult to produce and degrades over time if exposed to moisture or strong magic. For this reason, it is typically manufactured in small batches and stored in lead-lined containers etched with nullifying runes.  

Manufacture of Ammunition

  Once powder is prepared, ammunition manufacture begins in dedicated shot-forges separate from rifle construction. Dwarves believe that mixing weapon and ammunition forging invites disaster, a superstition reinforced by several infamous explosions. Projectiles are cast or forged first, then cooled and inspected for symmetry, weight, and surface integrity. Any imbalance can cause tumbling, barrel damage, or unpredictable impact behavior. Rune-Shot and specialty rounds undergo additional scrutiny, as even a shallow flaw can disrupt magical effects. Powder charges are measured using calibrated stone scoops or mechanical dispensers, never by eye. Each charge is paired to its projectile type and sealed within paper, leather, or thin metal casings depending on design. For Shatter-Grit and Chain-Shot ammunition, internal assembly is performed with blunt tools to prevent sparks, often under silence enforced by tradition.  

Quality Control and Proofing

  Every batch of ammunition is proofed before approval. Test firings are conducted in reinforced galleries, with observers watching for irregular recoil, delayed ignition, or abnormal residue patterns. Powder that leaves excessive fouling is rejected, as buildup can cause misfires in extended engagements. Rejected ammunition is dismantled, its powder soaked and rendered inert before disposal. Dwarves consider it deeply unlucky to reuse powder from a failed batch, believing its “temper” has been spoiled.  

Storage and Handling Doctrine

  Thunder Rifle powder and ammunition are stored separately whenever possible. Powder is kept in stone-lined vaults with controlled humidity, while finished rounds are sealed in rune-marked crates indicating load type, powder blend, and forge of origin.   Gunners are taught never to mix powder sources, even if recipes appear identical. A rifle and its powder are considered a matched pair; divorcing the two invites misfire or worse. In many kingdoms, using unauthorized powder is a punishable offense, treated as sabotage rather than negligence.

Manufacturing process

The creation of a Thunder Rifle is not treated as simple weaponsmithing, but as a controlled industrial ritual that blends metallurgy, engineering discipline, and restrained rune craft. Among the Mountain Kingdoms, only a handful of holds, most notably Dangul, Hivaral, and select forges of Ulthar, are trusted to oversee the full process. A Thunder Rifle made carelessly is not merely flawed; it is a danger to its wielder and everyone standing nearby.   The process begins with barrel forging, the most critical and failure-prone stage. Unlike surface firearms, Thunder Rifle barrels are formed from layered dwarven steel alloys infused with trace volcanic metals uncovered after the Time of the Bleeding Earth. These alloys are folded repeatedly to distribute stress evenly, then bored using rune-guided drilling rigs to achieve near-perfect internal symmetry. Any microscopic flaw in the barrel wall is grounds for immediate destruction of the piece, as uneven pressure during firing can cause catastrophic rupture.   Once shaped, the barrel undergoes pressure tempering. It is heated over controlled magma vents or deep forges and then quenched in mineral-rich oil mixed with powdered obsidian or ashglass. This process hardens the steel while preserving flexibility, allowing the barrel to withstand repeated explosive forces without becoming brittle. Master smiths test each barrel by striking it and listening to the resonance; a true Thunder Rifle barrel rings clean and deep, like a bell carved from stone.   The thunder chamber and firing mechanism are assembled next. Dwarves favor reinforced flintlock or early percussion systems, heavily modified to resist fouling and misfire in ash-filled environments. Springs are oversized and hardened, gears are shielded, and ignition channels are widened just enough to ensure reliable spark without venting force backward. In some kingdoms, particularly Hivaral, mechanical components are partially standardized, allowing damaged parts to be replaced in the field rather than requiring full refitting.   At this stage, limited stabilization runes may be applied. Unlike the grand rune networks of fallen Aldrin, Thunder Rifle runes are intentionally simple and short-lived. They are etched shallowly along the chamber and barrel exterior, designed only to reinforce the metal at the instant of firing and then dissipate. These runes are never meant to store power; they merely guide stress and heat away from weak points. Overuse of rune craft is considered reckless and has led to several infamous forge disasters.   The stock and housing are carved separately, typically from dense mountain hardwoods or treated understone composites. Dwarves prioritize durability and recoil absorption over ornamentation, shaping the stock to anchor firmly against the shoulder and chest. Internal channels are hollowed to house recoil-dampening inserts, often made from layered leather, resin, and flexible metal plates. Clan marks, service runes, or honor brands are usually carved at this stage, binding the weapon to its future bearer.   Before final assembly, each Thunder Rifle undergoes proof firing. The weapon is mounted in a reinforced stone cradle and fired multiple times with increasing powder loads. Smiths watch for hairline fractures, rune instability, and irregular recoil patterns. Rifles that fail are destroyed immediately, their components melted down and reforged. No Thunder Rifle is ever repaired before its first proof; a failure at birth marks it unworthy of service.   The final step is powder pairing. Thunder Rifles are calibrated to specific blackpowder blends refined with volcanic salts and mineral additives. Using the wrong powder can reduce effectiveness or cause dangerous pressure spikes. For this reason, many rifles are issued alongside sealed powder flasks marked with matching forge sigils, ensuring compatibility even decades later.   Completion of a Thunder Rifle is marked not by ceremony, but by silence. The smiths extinguish the forge flames and allow the weapon to cool untouched for a full day and night. Only then is it lifted, inspected one last time, and recorded in the forge ledgers. From that moment on, the rifle is considered a living tool of war, its creation complete, its fate bound to the hands steady enough to wield thunder without fear.

History

The Thunder Rifle is the pinnacle of dwarven blackpowder craftsmanship, a weapon born from desperation, ingenuity, and the violent reshaping of the world during the Time of the Bleeding Earth. Where early firearms were crude, slow, and unreliable, the Thunder Rifle represents the moment dwarves learned to bind engineering, metallurgy, and controlled rune craft into a single, devastating instrument of war. Its report is said to echo like a cracking mountain, giving the weapon its name.   Forged from reinforced steel alloys developed after volcanic upheavals revealed new mineral veins, the Thunder Rifle is heavier and more durable than surface-made firearms. Its barrel is thick-walled and often etched with stabilization runes designed to channel explosive force forward rather than outward, preventing catastrophic failure. Many surviving examples still bear heat-scars and soot-blackened engravings, marks of long service in ash-choked tunnels and siege-ravaged halls.   At the heart of the Thunder Rifle is its thunder chamber, an improved firing mechanism that uses compressed blackpowder charges refined with trace volcanic salts. When ignited, the powder detonates with exceptional force and consistency, propelling the projectile with far greater speed and armor-piercing capability than earlier muskets. Some variants incorporate rune-lined breeches that briefly reinforce the chamber at the moment of firing, allowing the weapon to withstand pressures that would shatter lesser guns.   In dwarven warfare, the Thunder Rifle changed everything. Shield walls that once dominated tunnel combat could be shattered at range, and heavily armored foes, orc champions, ogres, and even rune-plated constructs, fell to well-placed shots. Units armed with Thunder Rifles, often known as Thunder Blasters or Forge Gunners, became a core element of militarized kingdoms such as Ulthar. In tight corridors, a disciplined firing line could turn an advance into a massacre within seconds.   Despite its power, the Thunder Rifle demands respect. Reloading is slow and deliberate, requiring careful measurement of powder and precise seating of the shot. Misfires are rare but catastrophic when they occur, often maiming careless users. For this reason, dwarves treat the rifle as both weapon and oath, many inscribe clan marks, service runes, or beard-brand symbols along the stock, binding their honor to the gun’s proper use. True Thunder Rifles remain stubbornly dwarven in nature, refusing to perform reliably unless maintained by hands that understand stone, metal, and patience in equal measure.

Thunder Rifle ammunition is as carefully engineered as the weapon itself. Dwarven gunners understand that the rifle delivers power, but the shot decides the outcome. As a result, ammunition production is tightly regulated, with each round type designed for specific battlefield conditions, tunnel environments, or enemy threats. Below are the most common and well-documented Thunder Rifle munitions in use across the Mountain Kingdoms.  

Forge-Ball

  The Forge-Ball is the most widespread Thunder Rifle round, consisting of a dense steel or lead alloy sphere treated to resist deformation on impact. Designed for reliability, it performs consistently in narrow tunnels and open battlefields alike. Forge-Balls excel at penetrating mail, leather, and light plate, making them the preferred ammunition for line infantry and garrison forces. Their predictable trajectory and minimal fragmentation reduce the risk of tunnel collapse, an important consideration in subterranean warfare.  

Armor-Breaker Spike

  Forged from hardened steel or tungsten-rich alloys, Armor-Breaker Spikes are elongated, conical projectiles designed to punch through heavy armor and reinforced shields. Shallow stabilization grooves help prevent tumbling in flight, while the pointed tip concentrates force into a devastating impact. These rounds are often issued sparingly due to cost and barrel wear, reserved for elite enemies such as orc champions, ogres, or rune-plated constructs.  

Rune-Shot

  Rune-Shot rounds carry etched micro-sigils along their surface, activated by the heat and pressure of firing. Upon impact, the runes release a brief magical effect—most commonly concussive force, disorientation, or localized binding. These effects are intentionally limited to avoid unstable feedback. Rune-Shot is especially effective against supernatural foes, constructs, or enemies protected by magical wards, though it is expensive and prone to degradation if stored improperly.  

Shatter-Grit Round

  Designed for close-quarters tunnel fighting, Shatter-Grit rounds are thin casings filled with metal shards or stone grit. On impact, the casing ruptures, spraying fragments in a wide cone. While ineffective against heavy armor, this ammunition is devastating against lightly armored infantry and can clear chokepoints in moments. Commanders must use Shatter-Grit cautiously, as uncontrolled fragmentation risks structural damage in older tunnels.  

Magma-Tip Round

  A rare and hazardous innovation, Magma-Tip rounds contain a core of heat-reactive mineral refined from Bleeding Earth deposits. Upon striking a hard surface or armored target, the core ignites, releasing intense localized heat capable of burning through armor or sealing wounds through cauterization. These rounds are banned in some kingdoms due to the risk of uncontrolled fires and tunnel destabilization, but remain in use by siege units and emergency defenders.  

Chain-Shot Pellet

  Consisting of two or more smaller projectiles linked by fine, high-tensile wire, Chain-Shot Pellets are designed to disrupt formations and entangle enemies. When fired, centrifugal force spreads the pellets outward, allowing the wire to wrap around limbs, weapons, or shields. While less lethal than solid shot, Chain-Shot excels at disabling targets and breaking charges in confined spaces.  

Deep-Echo Round

  A specialty round used primarily by Kembar tunnel guards, the Deep-Echo round emits a resonant shockwave upon impact with stone. The wave travels through rock rather than air, revealing hidden chambers, tunnels, or moving enemies by sound and vibration. Though minimally lethal, Deep-Echo ammunition is invaluable for reconnaissance and anti-ambush operations deep underground.  

Vault-Seal Slug

  Designed for emergency defensive use, Vault-Seal Slugs are crafted from expanding metal alloys that flatten on impact. Their purpose is not to kill, but to collapse doorways, seal breaches, or jam mechanisms instantly. Dwarven defenders use these rounds to deny access during retreats or to isolate invading forces within compromised tunnel networks.
