Part 1: The Anatomy of the City
1. Of the Foundations of the City
In the wake of the Ath Mailon departing from Rillan Aur, the journey down the Envalcir led them to the western banks of Mireth. They came ashore amid the storm of the journey's end, not far from where the city is now. It was here, where the three distinct currents of the Envalcir, the Makour, and the Monour converged, that the Original Eleven resolved to build their settlement. Accompanied by the Maiden herself, her first children bound themselves together with the first Charter in the 111th year of the Age of Light. The Ath Mailon named the city in her honor, declaring it forevermore Mauribon, which in the tongue of the Elves is "The City of the Maiden".
2. Of the City Walls
To shield the landlocked flanks of the city, the Elves have raised a great curtain of stone stretching nearly four leagues in circuit. Forty-five guard towers break this limestone boundary, fortified with overhanging machicolations and deep moats filled with rushing seawater. Along the standard ridges, the walls tower to the height of four men, swelling to over twenty cubits where they flank the primary gates. The beige-and-cream bricks gleam with a distinct bluish undertone under the sun, serving as a stark warning to invaders and a beacon to travelers.
3. Of the Gates
Seven gates pierce the walls of Mauribon, barred by night but welcoming to peaceful travelers by day. Entry through any of these requires advance notice to the watchmen. The northern Smejda Gate spans the Makour, greeting the Dwarves of the North. Along the Envalcir lies the Athmar Gate, serving as the primary ceremonial entrance to the metropolis. In the south, the Uisge and Aemari gates grant heavy wagons access to bustling merchant districts, though they close strictly at sundown. Guarding the western tides is the Rhyanar Gate, not a portal of timber, but a massive chain drawn across the entire Envalcir to bar uninvited hulls at night. Finally, those seeking the ancient hills of the original settlement must cross the Makour via the fortified bridges of the Rylin and Sneha gates.
4. Of the Four Quadrants
Three distinct rivers: the Envalcir, Makour, and Monour, naturally divide the metropolis into four quadrants, each serving a unique purpose. The Northwestern Quadrant preserves the ancient settlement; here, a visitor can find the civil City Center, the sovereign fortress of Kaer dour, the prestigious Uisge University, and the sacred Reflecting Pools. South of the Envalcir lies the Southwestern Quadrant, a bustling haven of vast shipping ports, affluent merchant markets, and dense warehouses. To the northeast, the heavily populated Upper City rises, home to the famed Durstraidd District, where master smiths forge the finest relics and weaponry in the known world. Finally, the Southeastern Quadrant comprises the Lower City, housing the vast majority of the city's working population.
5. Of Magic and Water
As the ancient capital of the Lin Mailon (or Water Elves), the metropolis maintains its sacred maritime heritage down to its very core. A traveler will quickly marvel that Mauribon does not dim with the setting sun; thousands of luminous waterstones have been embedded into the facades and architecture, casting a perpetual, starry radiance across the avenues at night. This architectural devotion is mirrored in the streets, where the local limestone is bound with seawater to give the entire sculpted city a shimmering, azure understone. To traverse this Elven artwork, visitors must either navigate the dozen grand stone bridges or use the river ferries, guided safely across the current by the ancient power of Elven relics.
Part 2: The Governance of the Balance
6. Of the Steward of the Seasons
Contrary to what the title may suggest to foreign ears, the Steward is no mere figurehead or representative of an absent monarch, but the absolute reigning sovereign of the realm. Since the harrowing days of the Great Storm, a scion of the Ancient and Noble House Rylin has guided the Elemental Enclaves, executing the Principle of Stewardship to maintain the Balance until the Maiden's promised return. The formidable fortress of Kaer Dour, sculpted where the Envalcir meets the broad western seas, serves as the sovereign's seat. While this ancestral estate remains open to peaceful visitors for public audiences each rotation, all guests must respect the Rien Lineth, the elite personal guards tasked with protecting the Steward's person.
7. Of the Council of Mauribon
Aiding the Steward in the day-to-day administration of the capital are the six specialized ministers of the Council of Mauribon. Frequently drawn from trusted companions and the Ancient and Noble Elven Houses, these councilors serve as the top advisors to the sovereign and govern the civic laws a traveler must navigate. The Councilor of the Maiden stands at the Steward’s right hand, speaking with the absolute voice of the throne. Military concerns are split between the Councilors of War and Defense, who command the standing vanguard and the town guards, respectively. Legal disputes or violations of the Maiden's Law fall under the strict purview of the Councilor of Justice. Meanwhile, the Councilor of Health maintains the city's pristine infrastructure and public sanitation, while visiting merchants answer directly to the Councilor of Coin to ensure fairness across the guilds.
Part 3: The Wonders of Mauribon
8. Of the Reflecting Pools
Easily the most sacred location to the children of the Maiden, the elves have spent over thirty millennia sculpting this semi-natural marvel out of the northern limestone cliffs. Where nature originally hollowed out massive subterranean caverns, elven craftsmanship has transformed the stone into a monumental showcase of Water. The former home of the Eldrin, Mauri the Maiden, features dozens of pristine basins, both naturally formed and hand-chiseled, providing a beautiful canvas.
Not content with simple pools, generations of stonemasons and artificers have continuously smoothed and expanded the Pools, opening grand apertures in the cliff faces to invite the sun within. Living water currents are masterfully channeled through these upper windows, spilling into cascading waterfalls and artistic stone spillways. The unique contours create a serene acoustic soundscape, echoing the entire tapestry of the water's voice. At twilight, the radiance of waterstones bounces off polished silver mirrors, flooding the caverns with an ethereal display visible throughout the city. Today, a dedicated clergy neighborhood stands vigil outside the pools, ensuring that scions of the Lin Malion maintain them for all the centuries yet to unfold.
9. Of the Ports of Mauribon
South of the Envalcir River mouth lie the massive ports of the capital, a sprawling testament to the city’s commercial might. Situated at the apex of the primary western ocean current, Mauribon acts as the premier trade nexus between the high Enclaves, the northern dwarves, and the foreign human kingdoms. This global contact feeds the legendary shipwright traditions of the Lin Malion and the Fen Mailon, whose vessels are renowned for blending seamlessly with the waves.
To facilitate this immense wealth, the southwestern quadrant is heavily devoted to a vast network of stone docks capable of accommodating fifty merchant vessels concurrently, flanked by endless rows of storage warehouses. The organized chaos of the waterfront is a spectacle for any traveler. Beyond the bustling timber yards and coastal algae lagoons, visitors will find dozens of lively inns and taverns catering to sailors and merchants alike. Here, amidst the scent of salted fish and foreign spices, one can always find a place to rest between bouts of trade.
10. Of the Durstraidd District
Situated at the vital southwestern tip where the currents of the Envalcir and Makour rivers converge, the Durstraidd District stands as a monumental testament to elven craft. Whether a traveler seeks a Master Swordsmith, a Master Armoursmith, an Artificer, or a Relic Keeper, the finest workshops in the Western Seas are gathered along these paved avenues. The district is renowned for refining the valuable lead, zinc, and silver ores brought down from the northern cliffs, working within magically enhanced forges that burn with pure, controlled elemental fire.
Most legendary, however, is the district’s custody of ancient relics. While the secret method for forging new Elven Steel has been entirely lost to history, Mauribon boasts two of the only six master artisans in all of Eldux who possess the sacred knowledge required to mend and repair surviving Elven Steel artifacts. For this reason, knights and sovereign collectors travel leagues across Mirith to petition the Durstraidd smiths. Visitors should navigate the smoky, ruby-lit plazas with care, keeping in mind the wry local proverb spoken among the stalls: "If you cannot find a weapon here, you truly do not need to be stabbing someone".
11. Of the Uisge University
Perched upon the western coast of Mauribon, Uisge University stands as the premier seat of higher learning west of the Citadel. Founded during the Age of Light by a visionary second son of House Uisge, this coastal academy has long endured as an unyielding fount of ancient wisdom. Here, scholars of all generations gather to advance their understanding, pursuing advanced mastery in Religion and Lore, Governance, and the Arts of Exploration. The prestigious faculty includes master scholars trained across Eldux, including sages from the Citadel itself. Within these stone lecture halls, every scroll unrolled and every star mapped serves the grand, ongoing mandate of the Elemental Enclaves: to refine and bring creation to its highest fruition before the Maiden’s prophesied return.
