Atheism
Atheism is a fairly new 'religious' doctrine developed predominantly by the dwarves. It is a philosophical theory that states that the gods are no more all knowing than the average denizen of the Wuld and therefore not deserving of service or veneration.
Divine Origins
After the dwarven god was slain by Diavalo in the Cataclysm, many of the dwarves were left questioning if being a deity really was anything that deserved veneration. If they could be slain just as quickly as any mortal, were they truly worthy of being called gods?
The dwarven philosopher Eragoras said no. He believed the mortality of the gods and their inability to foresee or prevent the Cataclysm was an indication that they were no more than exceptionally powerful mortals who were simply manipulating their creations into believing they were all powerful gods. Eragoras was able to convert a large number of his fellow dwarves into believing this theory and thus the dwarven sect of atheism was born.
Granted Divine Powers
Individuals with particularly strong convictions regarding atheism may become anti-paladins or clerics of the Knowledge, Arcana, or Trickery domains (5e) or Chaos, Knowledge, Liberation, or Magic domains (Pathfinder). Rather than drawing upon the power of a god, atheists draw upon the power of their personal convictions.
Political Influence & Intrigue
After the re-emergence of the dwarves after the Cataclysm, atheism was spread to other kingdoms via trade routes. While running in contention with the Clockwork Church, some of its doctrines on the nature of godhood have been accepted by the Elven Religious caste.
Total atheism remains predominantly a dwarven world view, however many elves have accepted the idea that the gods are fallible, though still deserving of worship. Inquisitors of the Clockwork Church however view atheism as a sin only usurped in deviancy by magic use. While atheists are allowed to pass through the Empire's borders, they are not allowed to speak of their belief to anyone during their time in their lands else be arrested for sedition.
