Frozen science

Dave was breathing heavily. The installation was going slower than expected due to the light rain. He checked his base connection again. The tube was securely connected, as always. As he was trained to do he pushed aside his doubt and continued overseeing the robots lifting the panels into position.

Slowly the parabolic mirror was taking shape and to Dave's delight the rain seized when there was about an hour left before his work was set to be done.

Most would call people like Dave either heroes or fools to walk on the surface of their home planet, what with the raining oxygen and nitrogen, but Dave did not mind. For Dave there was a great treasure to be had while working here, the open sky.

Gradually the clouds drifted away, leaving only the full beauty of the milky way in their wake. Once again Dave needed a moment to take it all in. Millions of stars and in the distance a few galaxies, all illuminating the cold surface that was Earth as it was hurtling through empty space.

"What was the name of our home star?" He muttered to himself.

"It was 'Sol', Dave. You are daydreaming again." A slightly amused voice answered through the speakers in his helmet.

Dave looked back to the robots, who just reported that construction had finished successfully.

"Thanks and sorry, Diane."

"Don't worry about it too much. Maybe this telescope will find us a new star to call home."

"There is always hope." Dave responded as he glanced up at the stars one more time before turning away, heading to the tunnel that lead to the warmth of the mantle.
