Foci
Occasionally also just called focuses, these are the tools that magicians use to help them enchant other objects.
Magic For Hobbyists
Magic is not a super common thing in this modern world. It wasn't common in the olden days either. Superpowers kind of took precedence, and magic was not quite the equalizer that some people wanted it to be so they usually abandon it pretty quickly.
That said, according to the things I have read there are a lot of different ways to use magic, but one of the most common is as a crafting discipline. And the most common use of that is to enchant objects to do a specific task. For some reason, this isn't something that self-proclaimed magicians tend to do, and it's the more casual magic-users who do these things.
Enchantments require a focus, to essentially transfer the magic from the user (or an object) into another object (or user). Hence you need a foci.
The Orb!
A/N: Important to note that all of this is conjecture and coming from secondhand information because no one thinks that Ruby should be anywhere near magic as a talent and while she shows a distinct fascination with the topic she does ultimately leave it alone in practice, focusing on the theory and the conspiracies around it.
Think of it like a tiny little wormhole or as a power cable. Wormhole in that it is creating a kind of hole to flow things through that normal don't flow, and a power cable in that things flow through it.
According to my sources, you want as smooth of a surface as you can manage. The smoother, the easier. This pertains to the surface primarily, although some people insist that the inside needs to also be smooth in an atomic sense, with the chemical bonds and links being all smoothed out.
Size doesn't matter. Just so long as it's very very round. The material might matter, but this is a highly personal thing.
Although, some people state that oblong is actually better. The idea is that with the foci being round, the energy can come in from anywhere and then go back out in any direction. The more pointed the foci, the stronger the directional pull, which adds complication to the enchantment, albeit also coming with more inherent power.
