Summary

No one dares enter the woods anymore. Despite the abundance of land and resources, everyone who has ever stepped within its area has vanished without a trace. At least, that’s what people say now—half warning, half superstition, repeated so often it’s become a legend. Children grow up hearing it. Travelers take the long way around the forest, even though cutting through would save days of travel.

But there is another story, whispered only when the candles burn low. Some dismiss it as a tale meant to keep children from wandering too far at night, others swear it’s the truth. One of the oldest men in the village claims he has seen her with his own eyes: the Witch of the Woods.

Once, she was not a creature to fear. The oldest legends describe her as a healer, a guardian, a woman who walked between the mortal world and the wild. She tended the forest, spoke with its spirits, and protected the villagers from the dangers that lurked in the deeper groves. But something happened—something no one agrees on. A betrayal, a curse, a death, a broken vow. Whatever it was, it twisted her grief into fury.

For a century now, she has haunted the woods. Some say she kills trespassers. There are whispers that she simply takes them and absorbs them into the forest—turning them into roots, bark, or wandering shadows. Without humans to cut paths or gather wood, the forest has grown wild and impenetrable.

No one enters anymore.

Until, one day, a man decides he will.

His reasons are his own. Perhaps he sees opportunity in the abundant resources. Perhaps he wants to build a road to the next village, a shortcut that could change the region’s fortunes. Perhaps he is simply restless, drawn by the thrill of the unknown. Or perhaps—though he would never admit it—he has heard the whispers about the Witch and feels a strange pull toward her story.

Whatever his motive, he steps into the forest with courage no one else has shown in generations.

But the forest is not what the old tales prepared him for. It is alive in ways he cannot explain. Paths shift behind him. Trees seem to watch. Strange lights flicker between the branches. And sometimes, when he is very still, he hears a woman’s voice—soft, sorrowful, calling his name though he has never spoken it aloud.

As he ventures deeper, he begins to uncover fragments of the truth: remnants of old magic, traces of the Witch’s past, and signs that the forest’s curse is unraveling. The Witch is not merely a monster guarding her domain. She is bound by something older and darker than the villagers ever imagined. And perhaps, the story has changed over the years and the witch is not at all what she appears.

To survive, he must confront her—not as a hunter or a hero, but as someone willing to understand the wound that turned her into a legend of terror. And if he fails, he will become just another whisper in the dark.

Plot points/Scenes

• The Myth: The traveler walks into the village to stay one night, telling the bartender that he plans to make his way into the forest again. The townspeople all won't look at him. The bartender tells him the story of the forest and the Witch within.
• Entering the Forest: The forest seems idyllic, almost perfect. There are fallen trees for easy tinder and hunting in abundance. Nothing happens the first night, or the second. He builds a rustic cabin - a simple structure that keeps out the wind and the rain.
• The First Warning: He gets bold and treads deeper in the forest. Light seems to get swallowed the deeper in he goes. He finds a tree blocking his path that wasn't there a moment ago and realizes he does not know his way back to his cabin/camp. He catches his first glance of the witch—not an old, withered thing, but something appearing to be a young woman.
• The Home: The Witch's liar is found by the traveler deep in the woods, and she does not immediately kill him. He sees she is not just some immortal being, and that she has emotions and feelings. Whatever she is, she is part human or at least vulnerable to human feelings.
• Closer: Over days and weeks, the witch and the man find an uneasy truce. They grow closer. She leaves him gifts, and he lets her into his camp. She shows him the wilds of the forest and how to care for it.
• The Truth: He tells her why he moved to the forest, and she tells him the story of how she came to be and why the village hates her.
• The Town Rebels: The traveler hears of villagers planning on attacking the witch to get rid of the scourge once and for all. He is torn between what he knows and what he's heard. Although the villagers claim she has killed people, he has never seen her do it.
