Broken Obelisk Session 24
General Summary
Session 24: 21-12-2025
The party starts in the cavern underneath the palace of the Sorcerer-King Khal'zox. They disabled the Black Obelisk gathering magical power after defeating the dragon bone golemn. Trix disables the stairways and they head back up sneaking through the corridors. They notice that the undead are falling over into final death or their skulls erupt in bluish flame destroying them for good.
They sneak through the double doors into a long hallway. At the end they find a staircase winding back to the upper level. Carefully they make their way up the stairs checking for traps and magical runes but find nothing. At the top is a large circular domed room pitchblack and only those with darkvision could see into it until Kaxxa lights up the room with the mace of Lathander.
They see richly carpeted room made from black marble streaked with silvery lines. At the edges there are stairs leading up to a balcony with a tall golden throne. A figure emerges, a dessicated corpse crowned and dressed in a long purple robe holding a long staff topped with a blue crystal. It speaks and says: "Interlopers, finally you meet your doom..." and is promptly cut-off by Kaxxa and Trix casting spells at him. He blocks the Moonbeam spell but gets hit by a Fireball.
Suddenly, time starts to flow strangely.. until the party starts moving in slow-motion, their limbs unable to make any quick movements. Until for a heartbeat or two it stops completely. They see the Lich is now flying above them bathed in a shimmering field of energy and yelling: "Such a pitiful group... A holy man, a changeling, a demon worshipper, a stunted mage and two savages! I'll destroy you all!"
With the last words of the Incantation he yells: "Come, T'analaneth! I offer you their souls to feast on them in the Hells! Come, and destroy them!". An Infernal Gate opens in front of them giving a glimpse of Avernus, the first layer of Hell, and a huge Devil with a gigantic sword steps through.
They battle the Devil and take some shots at the Lich flying up above. As they start hearing footsteps approaching from behind a huge explosion shatters the dome above them. Through the opening three masked figures, the Masks of Ulric, fly through and skewer the Lich on their glaives while chopping off his jaw and one of his arms. The lead mask impales him on the wall and starts rummaging through his pockets and takes something.
The party still battling the Devil and the undead knights that came up the stairs they see the Masks fly out the opening. The High Druid Yevef Sandru aids them with healing spells.
Bruise enraged strikes the Devil with his axe and pushes him back into the wall while Ron uses his magical scimitar to slash at his weak points, its blade drinking Infernal blood with a strange hunger. Kaxxa and Trix fling spell after spell at the Devil while Geralt shoots arrows in him with great accuracy. Torold his sword glowing with Divine light does devastating damage to the Devil until it drops to its knees and he drives his sword into its groin toppling him over. A quick slash takes off his head and he explodes in hellish fire.
They watch as the Masks take off with the last Keyshard of the broken obelisk and decide to loot the palace and look for the Liches laboratory or study to find its phylactery to finish it off for good. Finding a hidden cache of gold and magic items behind the Lich's throne they divide the spoils amongst themselves.
In the east wing of the palace they find an identical layout to the west. In the middle room there is a chest. Ron investigates it and finds that the chest is trapped and the trap is somewhere inside. Cautiously he disables the trap and unlocks the chest. Trix uses his mage hand to open it from a distance. Inside is a black crystal ball. Bruise lifts it out and notices its really heavy! Trix identifies it as a Dark Star, a powerful magical bomb that opens an Astral Gate to a deadzone of the Astral Sea.
Torold gets a message from Ymari that she's on her way with a Spelljammer. She found out through her spy network that the Masks have been hired by the Mindflayers and are heading to another Wildspace system to enter a Portal to the Far Realms to complete the ritual. They pick up the party from the roof of the Palace and head off to go through the Astral Gate before it closes.
